Episode 42 – “An Eye for an Eye” Part II
Previously on the Memoirs of Mayfield: The assailant turns out to be Prince Azure. He informs Sylvia he is coming to kill Scott since Hugh killed his own son years ago. Sylvia however agrees to marry him so that he will theoretically be stealing away Scott from Hugh by making Scott his next heir. Sylvia agrees to leave with him and go to London. She fixes them both a drink and leaves. Monsieur Brunette visits his mother, Mrs. White and asks he what happened to his daughter. She tells him that she doesn’t remember the timeframe of Brunette getting anyone pregnant because she was too busy dealing with the drama between Hugh and Bradford at the time. Meanwhile Miss Peach finds Sergei Gold’s body in the attic and lets out a scream, alerting everyone in the house that someone unwelcomed is there. Sylvia finds Mr. Boddy drunk in the Kitchen. After a length talk she realizes that sending Scott and Jet to boarding school isn’t the best idea. Jet and Mrs. White both venture downstairs after hearing Miss Peach’s screams and find the body of a man in the Study. Jet runs to get help where he finds his mother and Mr. Boddy kissing in the Kitchen…

-Midnight-
Jet stands in the Kitchen doorway with a headache of mixed up emotions.
“Mother!” he shouts
“Jet,” Sylvia gasps and pushes herself away from Mr. Boddy, “Jesus you scared me.”
“What the hell are you doing?” asks Jet
“I… um,” Sylvia is lost for words, “Mommy’s a little drunk, sweetheart.”
“I can see that.” Jet says looking at her tight-fitting outfit, “There’s a body in the Study.”
“What?” Mr. Boddy asks
“There’s a body in the Study.” Jet repeats, “I’d think you guys should be used to checking random rooms in the mansion for dead bodies by now.”
“A dead…” Sylvia is somewhat lost for words, “A dead body?”
“Yes,” Jet says taking her hand and dragging her into the Hall. Mr. Boddy follows closely behind.
“Is he… I mean are you sure he’s dead.” Sylvia is rather startled.
They reach the Study door to see Mrs. White standing near the door, “We found him like this.”
“Oh my god!” Sylvia gasps, “It’s not Philippe.”
“Who?” Mr. Boddy and Jet ask in unison
“Jet,” Sylvia says not taking her eyes off the body, “Go get your brother.”
“I’m rather confused.” Mr. Boddy says as they all enter the Hall.
“As am I.” Sylvia says sitting down on a chair next to the mail table
“I guess I’ll ask the obvious question.” Mrs. White says, “Who is Philippe?”
“The man who came to take Scott away.” Sylvia says
“Prince Azure?” Mr. Boddy asks
“He’s here in the mansion?” Mrs. White gasps, “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!”
“Why didn’t you call the police?” asks Mr. Boddy, “Or at least one of us?”
“I took care of it myself.” Sylvia says
“How?” asks Mr. Boddy
“Don’t worry about it.” Sylvia says
“Is that why you were going to London?” asks Mr. Boddy
“London?” Mrs. White asks, “In the middle of the night?”
“Oh will you two quit badgering me?” Sylvia snaps, “I need to think!”
“Do you think Philippe killed that man?” Mrs. White turns to Mr. Boddy
“It makes me wonder who else is in the house.” Mr. Boddy says
Mrs. White immediately thinks of her son, Monsieur Brunette and the encounter she had with him earlier, “Or the fact that anyone can really break into the manor.”
“Maybe we need to hire a porter again.” Mr. Boddy says, “I remember this house used to have a porter in the Gatehouse.”
“Hugh was trying to save money.” Mrs. White says
Sylvia Black gets up and walks across the Hall to the Lounge.
“Where are you going?” asks Mrs. White
“I need to think in quiet.” Sylvia says, “And you two are obviously not going to stop talking any time soon.”
She slams the Lounge doors.
“Do we call the police?” asks Mrs. White
“Let’s see what Sylvia comes up with.” Mr. Boddy says
“I guess I should find Mr. Ash.” Mrs. White says, “He’s a sound sleeper.”
“Let’s just hope he’s alive.” Mr. Boddy says
“Oh stop it!” Mrs. White says, “That’s a horrible thing to say!”
In the Attic of Tudor Close, Miss Peach breathes heavily as she backs away from the corpse of Sergei Gold. She knocks into a box which opens and spills Christmas decorations all over the floor. She climbs over them and races towards the staircase but stops short as she sees Monsieur Brunette climbing the stairs.
“We have a problem.” Monsieur Brunette says
“There’s a dead body up here.” Miss Peach says
“There’s a dead body down there.” Monsieur Brunette says
“What?” asks Miss Peach
“I overheard them talking and it appears that some man that none of them recognize was murdered down there.” Monsieur Brunette says
“How are we going to get out of here?” asks Miss Peach
“I think we need to wait patiently.” Monsieur Brunette says, “At least until morning.”
“But there’s a dead body up here.” Miss Peach says
“Don’t worry, it won’t hurt you.” Monsieur Brunette says
Down stairs in the Hall, Jet has returned without Scott.
“I couldn’t find him.” He tells Mr. Boddy
“Great.” Mr. Boddy says, “We’ll have to tell Sylvia.”
“I check on Aunt Claire.” Jet says, “She wasn’t there either.”
“Well there are only so many places in this house that they could be.” Mr. Boddy says
“They wouldn’t go outside, would they?” asks Jet
“It’s a clear night.” Mr. Boddy says, “The moon is bright and the air is calm. Maybe Claire went to walk by the lake.”
“But what about Scott?” asks Jet, “Maybe he heard the screams and ran off.”
“And we have to remember that Prince Azure is somewhere in this house.” Mr. Boddy says
“I hope they didn’t run into each other.” Jet says
Meanwhile, in the Billiard Room, Prince Azure listens at the door. Scott Black lies on the floor next to the snooker table, bound and gagged.
“I knew something was going to get in the way of my revenge.” Prince Azure says softly to Scott, “Your mother actually agreed to marry me so that you would be my heir.”
Scott mumbles behind his gag.
“It wasn’t a half bad idea.” Prince Azure says, “I think I should stick to the original plan, bringing you home to Africa with me. I’ll figure out what to do with you there.”
A tear runs down Scott’s cheek.
“You are just an innocent victim in all this.” Prince Azure says, “Just like my little boy, David.”
Prince Azure bends down and sits Scott up straight, “He was only two months old. He was in my wife’s arms when they were both shot and killed by men hired by your father to kill any witnesses! They were just witnesses.”
“I’m sorry,” Scott’s mumbles are audible
“Just be grateful I didn’t put a bullet in your head like I planned on it.” Prince Azure says, “I needed to be theatrical and explain to your mother why I was going to kill you. Then she hatched a plan that would keep you alive. It almost worked too…”
Back in the Hall, Mrs. White comes down the stairs with Mr. Ash who is in his pajamas and is wearing large round glasses. He takes a look into the Study and shudders.
“Do you know him?” asks Mrs. White
“Where’s Sylvia?” asks Mr. Ash
“In the Lounge.” Mr. Boddy says
Mr. Ash pushes open the Lounge door and sees Sylvia lying back on the fainting couch near the windows. She is staring out the open drapes into the forest that surrounds the south-west side of Tudor Close.
“You recognized him, didn’t you?” asks Mr. Ash
“Yes,” Sylvia says softly
“Does that mean…” Mr. Ash has concern on his voice
“Yes,” Sylvia says, “Philippe is here too.”
“Who would kill his royal advisor?” Mr. Ash asks
“I don’t know,” Sylvia says, “Scott? Claire? Jet? John? I don’t know.”
“None of them know Prince Azure like we do.” Mr. Ash says
“It doesn’t matter.” Sylvia says, “There was a scream coming from somewhere. Everyone came down to investigate and someone may have bumped into Mr. Rivers and thought he was an intruder.”
“So they killed him?” asks Mr. Ash
“He’s dead!” Sylvia says, “So yes, someone did kill him.”
“But how?” asks Mr. Ash, “And who?”
“I don’t know,” Sylvia says getting increasingly angrier, “I can’t begin to explain the travesties I’ve done tonight let alone pretend I’m bloody Sherlock Holmes and solve another damn murder in this rotten house!”
“Do you need a drink?” asks Mr. Ash
“I agreed to marry Philippe.” Sylvia says
“What?” asks Mr. Ash
“I told him that I would marry him so that Scott would theoretically be his son.” Sylvia says, “Philippe wanted to take Scott from Hugh, what better way than to become his father.”
“Good God, Sylvia.” Mr. Ash sits down on the end of the fainting couch that Sylvia is laying on.
“Jet walked in on me kissing John.” Sylvia says
“You and John?” Mr. Ash is shocked
“Oh it’s not like there is anything between us or like there ever will be.” Sylvia says, “It was spur of the moment. He was drunk, I needed a little liquid courage.” Her voice trails off
“How did Jet take it?” asks Mr. Ash
“He was outraged,” Sylvia says, “But the whole reason he barged in was to inform us of the body in the Study.”
“Which leads us back to Mr. Rivers,” Mr. Ash says, “Who would want to kill him?”
“I was getting ready to leave with Prince Azure.” Sylvia says, “We were going to go to London. He was going to use his diplomatic immunity to get a quick justice of the peace marriage.”
“Wouldn’t it become public knowledge?” asks Mr. Ash, “He is the prince of a small African nation.”
“He was going to hold onto the papers.” Sylvia says, “He said he would never send them in unless I gave him a reason to.”
“Is this still going to happen?” asks Mr. Ash
“I don’t know.” Sylvia says, “Philippe probably thinks I killed his advisor to show that I’m stronger than I appear. I was bringing a gun with me. It’s in my purse. I left it in the Kitchen when I talked to John.”
“Do you want it?” asks Mr. Ash
“I might as well.” Sylvia says, “Go fetch it for me. I should probably talk to everyone out in the Hall. I’m sure Jet has brought Scott down by now.”
“Jet was in the Hall,” Mr. Ash says, “But young Master Black was not.”
“What?” Sylvia asks, “He couldn’t find him?”
“I’m not sure.” Mr. Ash says
Sylvia springs up rather quickly and opens the doors leading to the Hall. Mr. Boddy, Mrs. White, and Jet all turn to her as she and Mr. Ash exit. Mr. Ash heads to the Kitchen.
“Where’s Scott?” asks Sylvia
“I couldn’t find him or Aunt Claire.” Jet says, “Do you think Prince Azure got him?”
“Scott!” Sylvia shouts, her voice echoing.
“Philippe will hear you.” Mrs. White says
“I really don’t care who hears me.” Sylvia says, “Everyone who’s in this house should know about the murder by now! Scott!” she shouts again
Mr. Ash returns from the Kitchen with Sylvia’s purse. He hands it to her and she puts it over her shoulder.
“We should go look for him.” Mr. Boddy says
“There’s a killer in the house.” Mrs. White says
“Oh for God’s sake,” Sylvia says, “We know it was one of us. There is no one else in the house except for Claire, Scott, and Philippe.”
“I didn’t do it.” Mrs. White says
“Neither did I.” Jet says
“Or I.” Mr. Boddy says
“I was asleep the entire time.” Mr. Ash says
“Then it must have been one of them.” Sylvia says
“Shouldn’t we call the police?” asks Mrs. White
“No,” Sylvia says, “Yes. Call my brother. Don’t tell him anything till he gets here.”
“What do I tell him?” asks Mr. Ash
“Tell him I need to talk to him about something,” Sylvia says, “I don’t know. Make it up as you go along. Improvise. I have to find my son. Scott!” she shouts again
“I’ll go with her.” John says following Sylvia up the stairs.
“I think it would be best if I went.” Jet shoots a look of disgust at Mr. Boddy
“Right,” Mr. Boddy backs away, “You go with your mother.”
Sylvia and Jet disappear upstairs.
“I guess that leaves us three to search the ground floor?” Mr. Boddy asks as Mr. Ash finishes his phone call.
“Yes,” Mrs. White says, “I suppose so.”
“Where should we check first?” asks Mr. Boddy as he walks past several doors, “The Billiard Room?”
He pushes open the door and turns on the lights to find the room empty.
“No one in here.” Mr. Boddy says
“No one’s in the Library either.” Mr. Ash responds
“Or the Conservatory.” Mrs. White says
“Let’s try the Ballroom, Kitchen, Dining Room, and Cellar in that case.” Mr. Boddy says
Outside in the darkness, Prince Azure carries Scott Black past the Garden.
“Don’t worry,” Prince Azure says, “I’ll untie you as soon as I get us back to my car.”
Scott writhes and moans in Prince Azure’s arms.
In the darkness a figure watches Prince Azure carrying Scott past the Swimming Pool.
Upstairs in the hallway Jet and Sylvia push open doors and turn on lights, calling out for Scott every few seconds.
“What if they’re gone?” asks Jet, “What if he took Scott.”
“Don’t say that.” Sylvia says, “Scott will be back, don’t you worry.”
“Everything was fine a few days ago.” Jet says panicking, “We were all happy.”
“We will all be happy once this is done.” Sylvia says, “And Philippe will be out of our lives. Scott won’t be in any danger.”
“How can you be sure?” Jet asks
“Because I know how to take care of my family.” Sylvia says
“Look!” Jet points to the attic door which is slightly open.
Sylvia reaches into her purse and pulls out the German War Pistol. She walks in front of Jet as they both climb up the staircase. They reach the top and see Miss Peach and Monsieur Brunette standing near the back of the room.
“Oh hell no,” Sylvia shoots the window behind Monsieur Brunette, scaring both him and Miss Peach
“Please,” Monsieur Brunette begs, “You don’t understand.”
“What I understand is that you are supposed to be dead.” Sylvia says, “And the minute you show up again Scott goes missing.”
Sylvia grabs Miss Peach by the hair and pulls her into a headlock.
“What are you doing?” asks Jet
“Start talking or your pretty little friend is going to get a bullet in her brain.” Sylvia says putting the gun to Miss Peach’s head.
“Alphonse,” Miss Peach says, “Tell them everything you know.”
“Listen to your little girlfriend, Alphonse,” Sylvia says, “You know that the next bullet will be for you. Only this time I’ll make sure that you’re dead.”
“I didn’t take Scott.” Monsieur Brunette says
“You did last time.” Sylvia says
“I didn’t come here for Scott.” Monsieur Brunette shouts
“Then why did you come?” Sylvia shoves the barrel of the gun harder against Miss Peach’s head
“I came for my daughter!” Monsieur Brunette says, “I came for Miss Peach…”
