Episode 11 – “Set in Motion”
Previously on the Memoirs of Mayfield: Dr. Black regains consciousness and assures his wife that he is alright. Mr. Meadow-Brook comes in and asks for a word alone with Dr. Black. Mrs. Black hides in the Secret Passageway and listens as Mr. Meadow-Brook tells Dr. Black that not joining Egret could get him killed. Dr. Black tells Mr. Meadow-Brook that the money in the off shore account is written in Mr. Green’s name, but isn’t really his money and he cannot claim it if anything happens to him. In her hotel room, Madame Rose is shocked when she receives complimentary tea. She quickly dumps it out, fearing its contents. Chandler arrives with Miss Peach. Miss Scarlet gets the wrong impression and argues with Chandler in the Lounge. Miss Scarlet throws the ring back at Chandler. Mrs. Peacock steps out of the shadows and tries to seduce Chandler. Mrs. Black listens from the other end of the Secret Passageway to hear Mrs. Peacock explain how she let Miss Scarlet kill her father years ago. Scott Black becomes bored in his room and ventures to his parent’s room to see the large toy chest at the foot of their bed. He begins to examine it when Mrs. White comes in to return Mrs. Black’s diary. She ushers the boy back to his room. Scott informs Mrs. White that Jet isn’t in his room. In the Library, the guests nervously gather as the storm rages on. In the Ballroom, Jet angrily holds a knife as he recalls Mr. Green instructing him to get the inheritance his father is leaving him, hinting that Jet needs to kill his father, or else Scott will turn up missing again…

-Evening-
In the Dining Room, Dr. Black sits with Miss Peach who picks uncomfortably at her food.
“This is really kind of you, Dr. Black,” Miss Peach says, “But I’m not really hungry.”
“I know when a girl is lying.” Dr. Black chuckles, “And you are indeed hungry.”
“Well if you insist.” Miss Peach chuckles as she proceeds to eat, “I apologize for being late and uninvited.”
“Don’t think anything of it.” Dr. Black says, “You look familiar.”
“Oh,” Miss Peach becomes flustered, “I must have one of those faces.”
“No,” Dr. Black says, “I’ve seen you before…” his voice trails off
“At the hospital?” Miss Peach hints
“Yes.” Dr. Black is still distant.
“Nurse Primrose told me that she was a close friend of yours.” Miss Peach says nervously, “Small town.” She gives an odd giggle
“Yes, well that solves that puzzle.” Dr. Black says, “Another glass of Merlot?”
“She told you, didn’t she?” asks Miss Peach, nervously twisting the locket around her neck.
“Well, she shared with me some things about your condition.” Dr. Black says motioning to her stomach, “I can’t say that I condone that sort of behavior, but if it helps you and the man you love, go with it.”
“You swear you won’t tell him?” Miss Peach asks
“Well I’m not even sure who ‘he’ is.” Dr. Black says pouring another glass of wine, “Then again, I suppose it is safe for you to be drinking.”
“Oh god! If Miles found out that I wasn’t really pregnant he’d never speak to me again.” Miss Peach says drinking the wine quickly
“Miles?” Dr. Black’s eyes widen, “Miles Meadow-Brook?”
“Yes,” Miss Peach says beginning to twist at her locket again.
“No, this is all wrong!” Dr. Black says rather upset, “You are trying to win over a married person? Trust me it doesn’t work like that. I should know…” his voice trails off once again
“Dr. Black,” Miss Peach says standing up, “Please, I have my own reasons for this. Just let me work this out.”
“Emily,” Dr. Black says, “Miles is going through enough. Don’t play the pregnancy card just to gain his love. He needs to know the truth.”
“You swore you wouldn’t tell!” Miss Peach says as tears fall from her face. She stands up in fear, “Please! I need him!”
“Emily, if you don’t tell Miles the truth, I will.” Dr. Black gets up and exits the Dining Room.
The lights flicker but remain on. Miss Peach’s eyes fill with worry and fear then land on a large brass Candlestick that rests on the center of the table. She slowly sits back down in the chair, thinking of her options.
Outside Tudor Close, lightning crashes across the sky as the worst of the storm rages in the sky. In the lawn, Sergeant Gray begins to stir. He feels around the soggy grass and his hand bumps into a rusty, blood stained Wrench. He picks it up and sees dried blood and hair stuck to the jaw of the Wrench. He feels the back of his head and immediately recoils his hand as a stinging sensation courses through his head. He stands up with trouble and leans against the concrete railing of the patio. He closes his eyes and tries to think.
-FLASHBACK- EARLIER THAT NIGHT-
Sergeant Gray exits the Billiard Room and steps onto the Patio. He cups his hand above his eyes to keep the rain out of them. He shines his flashlight towards the Front Gates to find that they are closed. He waves his flashlight around the yard. He notices the door to the Stables is open. He looks around him quickly as the sky illuminates with a brilliant flash of lightning. He walks across the wet driveway and reaches the Stables. He quickly shines his flashlight around the empty building. He walks into the building, stepping on dry hay. His silhouette is unidentifiable from the light of the dimming gray of the sky in the doorway. He continues to walk forward. A second silhouette appears behind him in the doorway. The figure behind him picks up a Wrench from the tool bench near the door. Sergeant Gray hears the clanking of the metal from the Wrench and spins around. The figure powerfully swings the Wrench and strikes the back of Sergeant Gray’s head.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
Sergeant Gray looks around the yard to see the light of his flashlight on the floor of the Stables through the open door. He looks in his hand at the Wrench and sighs. He peers into the Billiard Room and finds it empty. He enters and sets the Wrench down on the bar. He becomes dizzy and holds his head. He hears the muffled sounds of laughter coming from the Library. His head throbbing finally overcomes him and he collapses next to the Billiard Table. The side door from the Library to the Billiard Room opens and Mrs. Peacock and Chandler slip inside.
“Do you think someone saw us?” asks Chandler
“I hope so.” Mrs. Peacock smirks, “Because they need to walk in on something good.”
“I thought our plan was to be elusive and slip upstairs?” Chandler asks with confusion
“The plan changed when Miss Peach arrive.” Mrs. Peacock
“Wait a minute,” Chandler says with concern upon seeing the Wrench.
“It’s just a Wrench.” Mrs. Peacock says sitting up on the Billiard Table; she begins to unbutton her blouse
“No,” Chandler says, “Penelope, look.” He points to the section containing dried blood and hair.
“It’s just rust.” Mrs. Peacock says not paying interest, “Oh! Grab that champagne bottle while you’re up.”
“Where’s Dr. Black?” asks Chandler
Mrs. Peacock sighs letting her blouse drape over the billiard table, “Probably off making sure the house is in order. You worry too much. Now come over here and let me help you get that shirt off.”
“Something isn’t right. I need to find Cynthia.” Chandler says turning to the door to the Hall and exiting. Mrs. Peacock puts her blouse back on and follows him. Sergeant Gray remains lifeless on the other side of the Billiard Table.
In the Ballroom, Jet Black holds his head in frustration as he paces the room. He angrily kicks over the piano stool as the doors open. Mrs. White enters.
“I thought your father made it perfectly clear that he wanted you upstairs.” Mrs. White says
“I needed some air.” Jet says
“The air in the Ballroom is no different from the air in your bedroom.” Mrs. White says walking over to him
“I just need to be alone.” Jet shouts angrily
“Jet,” Mrs. White places her hand on his shoulder, “I know it’s been hard with all that is going on, but believe me when I tell you that it will change soon.”
“How can you be so sure?” Jet shakes her off of him, “Just a few days ago this town was a boring little blip on the map. Now people are dropping like flies. Who knows who will be next?”
“Nothing is going to happen to anyone in this family.” Mrs. White says
“Scott and my dad are certain that the killer is in the house.” Jet says
“Then I’d advise you to go upstairs with your brother.” Mrs. White says as they walk towards the door.
“Mrs. White,” Jet says painfully, “Ask my dad to come up and see me next time you see him.”
“Of course.” Mrs. White says.
Jet reaches out and hugs Mrs. White. She is shocked but embraces him tightly.
“Now stay upstairs.” Mrs. White says sternly
“I will.” Jet says, “Just give me a minute to clear my head.”
Mrs. White nods and exits the Ballroom. Jet removes his right hand from behind his back where he looks down at the Revolver his snagged from Mrs. White’s apron pocket.
In the Library of Tudor Close, Dr. Black enters to see only Miss Scarlet and Mr. Meadow-Brook.
“Where did everyone go?” asks Dr. Black
“They all went off into groups.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“Well some party this is.” Dr. Black chuckles nervously, “We can’t even stay in the same room.”
“You know how the ladies are,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “No offense, Cynthia.”
Miss Scarlet is too busy gazing out the window, distracted by her thoughts and the glow from the Stable door.
“So, Miss Scarlet, I heard from my wife that you and Chandler are going to tie the knot.” Dr. Black says
This reaches Miss Scarlet’s ears and she turns around.
“Actually, I think I need some air.” Miss Scarlet says, “I’m going to smoke a cigarette on the front porch.”
“Don’t get too wet.” Mr. Meadow-Brook calls after her, “The rain was blowing sideways earlier.”
“That tends to happen.” Dr. Black says, “So I wanted to have a word with Mr. Green. Do you know where he is?”
“Oh, I think he mentioned something about feeling a bit hungry. He’s probably in the Kitchen having some left over roast beef.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“He has quite an appetite.” Dr. Black says standing up with a groan, “Miles, make sure that you don’t let Mr. Green get any bit of that money. I just have a strange feeling that money is what fuels Mr. Green to do most of the things he does. I need the money to stay away from him. That two thirds is my money. That two thirds goes to Sylvia, Jet, and Scott if anything happens to me. I know we do not have that in writing but you are my lawyer and I need you to promise me that they will get it.”
“As your lawyer I can promise you that Mr. Green will get nothing and your family will be taken care of. As your friend I need to remember you that you are going to be fine, Hugh.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “You are just a bit worried because of what has been happening around town lately. Everyone has a theory as to why people are dying. It probably is not even closely related to us. We just get paranoid under stress.”
“If you say so,” Dr. Black says trying to force some optimism into his words, “I just cannot stop thinking about death. It has put my whole life into perspective. I know Sylvia will take good care of Scott and Jet if something happens to me. You and Jane will take good care of Jessica, right?”
“We have always loved her like she was our own.” Mr. Meadow-Brook smiles, “We are all going to be fine.”
“Thank you, Miles.” Dr. Black smiles
“For what?” Mr. Meadow-Brook asks
“For calming me down. You are a good man. I think I am going to have a drink. It has been a while since I have tasted alcohol.” Dr. Black sighs and exits the Library, leaving Mr. Meadow-Brook alone. The only sound is that of crackling wood in the fireplace.
Mrs. White sits in the Kitchen looking at the pocket watch Mr. Ash left for her.
Upstairs in the Master Bedroom, Mrs. Black and Mr. Ash stand before the chest.
“Where is Hugh?” asks Mrs. Black
“Probably trying to find an excuse to slip away from the guests.” Mr. Ash says
Back in the Kitchen, Mrs. White sighs and enters the Hall. She opens the cellar door and sees the electrical panel. She quickly pulls down the main switch.
Tudor Close falls dark and several noises from shocked guests are heard.
Back in the Master Bedroom, Mr. Ash and Mrs. Black turn on their flashlights.
“I guess we’ll have to go without him.” Mr. Ash says
“Who’s going to hold the flashlights?” Mrs. Black asks
“Lay it on the Hallway floor.” Mr. Ash says, “We’ll find out way to the Service Stairwell.”
Back in the Kitchen, Mrs. White reenters the candlelit room. She opens the Dining Room door and reaches into her pocket. She only feels the Rope. Fearfully she pulls the Rope out and drops it on the floor. She hurries back over to the Kitchen table and searches about the floor in a panic.
In a dark room of the mansion, a female and a male argue.
“What was I supposed to do?” the male shouts angrily
“I don’t know!” the female says, “We shouldn’t have gotten this deep into it. Death threats are serious.”
“We were in over our heads far before this whole thing started,” the male says
“But know look at us! We are just two siblings stuck in the middle of another situation that we could have easily avoided.” the female cries miserably
“Listen,” the male says, “You need to let me take care of everything. You just let me handle things.”
“Are you sure?” the female asks
“Yes.” the male says
Outside the Mansion, the rain has slowed down to a steady drizzle and the sky is calm. A loud gunshot is heard.
In the Upstairs Hallway, Mr. Ash stands alone in the light of the flashlight. He looks around the pitch black but only hears footsteps.
“Mrs. Black?” He calls out but finds she is no where to be found
Back downstairs in the Hall, Mrs. White nervously walks around with a Candlestick. The glow only illuminates a few feet in front of her as she moves. She bumps into someone, spilling hot wax on their arm.
“I’m so sorry!” Mrs. White says
The figure does not respond, but enters a room and slams the door. Mrs. White walks around the darkness, fearful and nervous. She hears another door slam.
In another room of the mansion, the fire in the fireplace is almost dead. A figure stands before the fireplace, holding a Fireplace Poker. Shadows from the fireplace show that there is someone on the floor.
In the Upstairs hallway, Mrs. Black returns to the chest to find Mr. Ash isn’t there.
“Dammit.” Mrs. Black groans, “This isn’t hide-and-seek is it?”
Just then the power goes back on by the help of Mrs. White at the top of the Cellar Stairs. She is about to close the door when she notices the lump at the bottom of the Cellar stairs.
She quickly goes down the stairs to find Hugh Black in a bloody heap. She covers her mouth in horror and bends over to check his pulse. Hugh Black weakly grabs her arm.
“She isn’t safe…” he says as blood seeps out of his mouth, “Mrs. Peacock isn’t safe anymore.”
“What?” Mrs. White gasps, “Why?”
“The money…” Dr. Black beings to cough and convulse. Mrs. White fearfully lets go of his hand as he goes still. Mrs. Black stands at the top of the stairs and looks down at Mrs. White and her blood drenched apron. Mrs. Black lets out a blood curdling scream. Her scream echoes throughout the mansion, alerting everyone, that something is wrong.
And even though this family tried so very hard to keep their secrets behind closed doors, they were about to find out that very soon everyone would know what really happened to Bryce, Estelle, and Hugh Black.
