Episode 10 – “A Night to Remember” Part II
Previously on the Memoirs of Mayfield: The day before, Dr. Hugh Black realized that his heart pills had been moved on his dresser. His wife told him it was probably Mrs. White while she was cleaning. At the party, Mrs. Peacock recalls the night of Bryce’s death and how their dinner was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Estelle Black. Meanwhile at the Hospital, Miss Peach goes in to see her father who is doing well. He tells her he wants her to move in with him so they can start a life together. She excitedly accepts. He tells her to go the Tudor Close and let the others know he is safe. Colonel Mustard also has a flashback of the night of Bryce’s death and how he overheard Mrs. Black and Dr. Black arguing about Estelle staying at the mansion. Sylvia tells Hugh she is taking Bryce and Jet and leaving him. Meanwhile back at the party, Miss Scarlet has her flashback of that night when she witnessed Estelle Black trying to pull Jet out of Sylvia’s arms. Sylvia in turn shoved Estelle down the stairs, causing her to land on Bryce, killing him instantly. In current time, Sylvia Black leaves the dinner table in a sudden moment of over whelming sorrow. Hugh Black comforts her and reminds her that Estelle is dead and she can’t harm anyone any more. Hugh then proceeds to collapse onto the Conservatory floor as he struggles for breath. Meanwhile outside, Sergeant Gray, who Hugh Black hired, is lying in the grass with a wrench next to him…

-Evening-
In the Kitchen of Tudor Close, Mrs. White reads the diary at the table. A bolt of lightning flashes near the Rose Garden followed by a loud crash of thunder. Mrs. White continues to read the diary, not paying any attention to the raging storm outside.
“I don’t understand.” Mrs. White says closing the book, “How is this possible?”
“Catching up on some reading?” Mr. Ash asks as he enters the Kitchen from the Dining Room.
Mrs. White quickly turns to Mr. Ash, “Oh! Don’t sneak up on people!”
“I know what you are reading.” Mr. Ash says pointing to the diary that Mrs. White is trying to hide behind a jar of sugar.
“Mrs. Black gave it to me.” Mrs. White says in defense
“I know.” Mr. Ash says, “She had me read it years ago as well.”
“It doesn’t make sense. Why did they have to lie and cover up his death?” Mrs. White says with confusion
“I’m afraid I can’t reveal to you the ‘why’s’ or the ‘how’s’.” Mr. Ash says, “When you are done reading can you come in to clear the table. They will be taking dessert in the Library.”
“Of course.” Mrs. White smiles, “Oh, Reggie, before you go, I just wanted to let you know that Mr. Naylor fixed the leaky pipe under the sink. He said to put the busted pipe in the Garage and he’ll see if he can make any repairs on it.” Mrs. White motions to the water corroded Lead Pipe lying on a dirty towel next to the sink.
In the Conservatory at Tudor Close, Sylvia Black buries her face in her husband’s shoulder. Mascara stained tears dripping onto the white collar of his shirt. Dr. Black lays still in a crumpled heap on the Conservatory floor. Mrs. Black stands up in fear as she checks her husband’s pulse. She is relieved when she feels it. She grabs an empty tea cup from the china hutch near the door and scoops water from the fountain in the center of the room. She splashes it on her husband’s face and he begins to come to. He sits up groggily.
“We need to get you to the hospital.” Mrs. Black says
“No,” Hugh says, “I’m fine. I have been feeling a little light headed all day. I must have blacked out. I am just under a bit stressed. I think I forgot to take my heart medication today.”
“Are you sure you’ll be okay?” asks Mrs. Black with concern
“I’m fine.” Dr. Black says as they hear the doorbell ring in the distance, “More guests are coming, we must greet them cordially.”
The Conservatory door opens and Miles Meadow-Brook enters.
“Are you two alright.” He asks seeing Hugh still on the floor.
“I slipped on some water.” Dr. Black lies, “Can you give me a hand.”
Miles Meadow-Brook helps Hugh Black off the floor with help from Sylvia.
“Thank you,” Dr. Black dusts himself off
“I was wondering if I could have a business related talk with you.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
Mrs. Black shows a look of alarm towards her husband for him to be left alone with a potential murderer in the house.
“I’ll only be a moment dear.” Dr. Black says, “Why don’t you go tell the other guests everything is alright.”
Mrs. Black nods and leaves the Conservatory, brushing against a wildly growing fern on the way out. She stops at the doorway and quietly slips behind the wild fern, listening quietly. She feels the wall behind her push back and she steps into the Secret Passageway.
“Odd,” Mr. Meadow-Brook picks up the tea cup off the edge of the fountain, “How water got on the floor.”
“My wife was feeling faint.” Dr. Black says taking the cup and putting it in the china hutch, “What did you want to talk about.”
“Didn’t Mr. Green tell you?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook
“Oh about Jane’s fun mind games?” Dr. Black says, “It’s all under control. I’ve got the numbers locked away safe and sound.”
“No not that.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“Oh?” Dr. Black says
“Mr. Egret wants to have a meeting with you this week.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“Mr. Green conveniently left that out. I am not involved with his dealings. I refuse to involve myself with Egret.” Dr. Black says
“Well I’d suggest going,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “You don’t want to upset the boss.”
“Egret is the boss of Mr. Green. I am my own boss.” Dr. Black says
“I still think it would be wise to talk to him.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“Miles I am not getting myself involved in the mafia. I have had enough trouble with that ivory incident in Africa.” Dr. Black says, “After all, I’m the main money source. With my generous handouts, your legal connections, and Mr. Green’s strength, Dante Egret wouldn’t risk letting go of Mr. Green just because I am refusing to do my part. My father was a man involved in mafia. I will not let blood spill in my house!”
“Yes, but everyone is to think Mr. Green is the money source.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “If it gets out that you have any part in this they will connect it to your late sister’s drug problem and try to find out where she was getting her drugs from. Dante is going to be under the impression you are working with a rival drug ring if you turn him down! Hugh, what is going on here?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook looking around nervously
“Miles,” Dr. Black says, “I can’t lie to you. My life is in danger. Someone wants me dead.”
“Who?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook
“I can’t tell you.” Dr. Black says, “If I tell you, your life is in danger.”
“We could go to the police.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“I don’t have enough solid evidence.” Dr. Black says, “If I die tonight, the money in the account cannot go to Mr. Green.”
“Of course.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“You are my lawyer and my friend.” Dr. Black says, “Promise me that you won’t let my money go to him!”
“I promise.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says painfully
“Good.” Dr. Black says, “Well then, shall we move on to the party. I would like to face my demons and make peace with them.”
At the Lakeview Palace Hotel, Madame Claire Rose stands in her room looking out the window. In the foggy distance she can see the roof of Tudor Close above the trees. Her breath creates fog on the window as she sighs while looking into the distance. Rain streaks down the windows. Madame Rose turns around and sits down at a table. There is a knock at the door. She checks her watch and answers the door.
“Yes?” Madame Rose asks seeing a hotel employee at the door.
“Your evening tea.” The worker says holding a tray
“I didn’t order tea.” Madame Rose says
“Compliments of the Hotel.” The worker says setting it down on the table in her hotel room.
Madame Rose looks at the tea as the worker leaves. She quickly dumps it into the sink and bolts her door.
In the Hall of Tudor Close, Mr. Ash is letting Miss Peach and Chandler Weiss into the house. Miss Scarlet and Mr. Green cross from the Dining Room to the Library when they see Chandler and Miss Peach. Mr. Ash goes to the Conservatory to retrieve Dr. Black.
“Chandler,” Miss Scarlet says with confusion, “I was worried.”
“I got a bit tied up at the hospital.” He says motioning to Miss Peach, “This is Emily Peach.”
“Charmed I'm sure.” Miss Scarlet says taking Chandler’s other arm. Miss Peach doesn’t get the signal and continues to hang on to Chandler’s right arm.
“Miss Peach, is it?” Miss Scarlet says, “Perhaps you should meet the owners, I’m sure they will be amused to find an unexpected guest.”
“Cynthia,” Chandler says in a low tone, “Don’t be rude.”
Miss Peach steps away from Chandler, “It was nice of you to bring me here, but I think I ought to tell everyone about my father and then leave.” She says staring deeply into Chandler’s eyes, “Good bye, Chandler.”
“You don’t have to leave.” Chandler says, “Your father wanted you here in his place.”
“Her father?” Miss Scarlet asks
“Colonel Mustard,” Chandler says
“Oh.” Miss Scarlet says forcing a half smile, “He seems like a nice man. I didn’t recall him mentioning having children.”
“Well honestly, he didn’t know until just today.” Miss Peach says
“Of course he didn’t.” Miss Scarlet says through her teeth
“Cynthia, are you alright?” asks Chandler
“Yes,” Miss Scarlet says, “I’m perfectly fine, Chandler, darling, can we talk alone in the Lounge.”
Miss Scarlet and Chandler head to the Lounge, leaving Miss Peach alone with Mr. Green, who remains silent next to the Library doorway.
In the Lounge, as soon as Chandler closes the double doors Miss Scarlet hounds him.
“What the hell was that thing you dragged in on your arm?” asks Miss Scarlet angrily
“Emily was very distraught at her father’s recent illness.” Chandler says, “Apparently the colonel had a heart failure.”
“Well give her my sympathy, but why did you bring her here?” asks Miss Scarlet with her hands on her hips
“She was really sad so I sat with her.” Chandler says
“Stay away from her.” Miss Scarlet says
“What?” Chandler says
“I don’t want you near that slut.” Miss Scarlet says
“Emily is not a slut. Why are you acting so selfish? This is childish!” Chandler says
“She is a gold digging slut. I bet she is not even his daughter! Don’t you see how she dresses? She is a disgrace” Miss Scarlet crosses her arms
“Look at you.” Chandler says motioning to Miss Scarlet’s revealing dress.
“I’m not throwing myself onto happily engaged men!” Miss Scarlet says as her face turns red in anger
“Neither is Emily!” Chandler shouts
“What about you?” Miss Scarlet asks
“What do you mean?” Chandler becomes nervous
“Do you like her?” Miss Scarlet fumes
“I barely know her. Calm down. You are acting irrational.” Chandler says
“I’m sorry,” Miss Scarlet rolls her eyes, “I thought I knew you, but when you picture yourself next to someone forever, you begin to see their true colors.”
“What are you talking about?” Chandler says, “You are having some sort of mental break down. I’m the same person I always was. ”
“Yes you are, an attractive man that lures women to their death like a spider with flies!” Miss Scarlet takes off her ring and throws it on the floor.
“Cynthia, please. You are being crazy. Leave the dramatic scenes for the theatre!” Chandler staring at the ring on the carpet
“No,” Miss Scarlet says, “I’m done.”
Miss Scarlet exits the Lounge leaving Chandler in the alone in the center of the room… or so her thinks. He doesn’t realize there is someone in the shadows of the room. Slowly the figure emerges from the shadows. Chandler seems the person’s reflection in the mirror and spins around quickly.
Penelope Peacock stands with a smirk of confidence on her face.
“You scared me.” Chandler says
“It was perfect. I think God heard my morning prayers.” Mrs. Peacock says
“Well here I am. We might as well sneak away and get this over with so I can patch things up with Cynthia.” Chandler says
“Morally you are not even cheating on her, seeing how the two of you just broke up.” Mrs. Peacock says embracing him. Chandler reluctantly gives in.
“I don’t understand why you wanted her broken hearted.” Chandler says accepting the kiss from Mrs. Peacock, “I mean you told me about her father’s death haunting you but you never explained why.”
“I’ve done things I’m not proud of, Chandler.” Mrs. Peacock says, “Just like you.”
From the inside of the Secret Passageway from the Conservatory to the Lounge, Sylvia Black struggles to listen.
“What did you do?” asks Chandler
“Cynthia killed her father.” Mrs. Peacock says solemnly
“Cynthia told me her father’s death was an accident.” Chandler says
“Cynthia doesn’t remember much of the night of her father’s death.” Mrs. Peacock says
-FLASHBACK- JULY 2, 1930-
Miss Scarlet runs around her parent’s bedroom in the wild way an average three-year-old would. She knocks into the side table on her father’s side of the bed and knocks over a glass bottle of pills. The bottle stays intact and the pills scatter on the hardwood floor.
“What was that?” Penelope calls from the bathroom
“Nothing.” Cynthia lies as she quickly scoops the pills back into the bottle. She sets them back on the side table as if nothing happened. She then hurries out of the room. From the bathroom doorway, Penelope watches.
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“She didn’t realize it at the time.” Mrs. Peacock explains
“Why are you telling me this?” asks Chandler
“Because I let Cynthia accidentally kill her father by switching his pills, resulting in his demise.” Mrs. Peacock explains, “He was sleeping with my sister. The bastard deserved it.”
“This is the same scenario.” Chandler says, “If Cynthia finds out she could kill me because her step-mother is sleeping with her fiance.”
“She won’t find out.” Mrs. Peacock says picking up the engagement ring from the floor, “I can assure you.”
In the Passageway, Mrs. Black hurries down the cobblestone stairs back to the Conservatory.
In the Hall, Dr. Black greets Miss Peach with enthusiasm. Mr. Meadow-Brook stands uncomfortably in the Conservatory doorway. He watches Miss Peach with an uneasy feeling in his stomach. Mrs. Black re-enters the Conservatory and steps next to Mr. Meadow-Brook.
“There you are.” He says giving a nervous chuckle
“I went outside for a quick cigarette.” Mrs. Black lies, “Who is she?”
“That would be Emily Peach.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Colonel Mustard’s biological daughter.”
“Is the colonel here?” she asks
“It wouldn’t appear he is.” Mr. Meadow-Brook shrugs.
Back in the Kitchen, Mrs. White washes the dinner plates will Mr. Ash arranges the desserts on a tray.
“I’ll take these to the Library,” Mr. Ash says, “When you are done with the dishes I want you to change out of your maid uniform and join the rest of us in the Library.”
“Why?” asks Mrs. White
“Because Dr. Black wants you to be present at all times so that when the gunshots ring, you will be out of suspicion.” Mr. Ash turns to the door carrying the tray of desserts. He stops and turns back to her, “Put the diary back in their bedroom, we don’t want someone finding it in the Kitchen,” Mr. Ash turns to the door but just as quickly turns back to Mrs. White, “When you shoot, wear a glove. We don’t want gun powder on your hands.” He resumes to heading to the Library when he stops and turns to her once again, “Can you open the door for me.”
“Oh of course.” Mrs. White says realizing his hands are full.
Upstairs in his bedroom, Scott Black sits bored in the window alcove in his room. He walks over to the plate of food Mr. Ash had brought up earlier and picks at the dinner roll. He looks at the door adjacent to his room and opens it slowly. He walks down a narrow corridor with a small window looking into the back yard. He opens the door at the other end of the corridor to find himself in his parent’s room. His eyes widen as he sees the old chest wrapped up at the foot of their bed. He begins to finger with a spare piece of Rope on the edge of the bed. He walks around the chest examining it from all angles. The door opens, startling him. He is slightly relieved to see Mrs. White.
“Gracious!” Mrs. White shrieks setting the diary down on Mrs. Black’s vanity, “Scott, you mustn’t be in here. You know how your parents feel about you being in their room.” She picks up the boy by the arm and practically drags him back down the private corridor to his room, “Your parents told you and your brother to stay in your rooms tonight. It is for your own safety. I can bring you up some books from the Library if you’d like. Would you like a deck of cards from the Billiard Room?” She closes his bedroom door as they enter. Scott is still holding the frayed length of Rope. Mrs. White quickly snatches it from him and stuffs it in her apron with the Revolver.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. White.” He says, “I tried Jet’s room earlier but he wasn’t there.”
“He wasn’t in his room?” Mrs. White asks nervously
“No,” Scott says
Mrs. White forces on a reassuring smile, “Perhaps he went to the bathroom.”
“I’ve gone in his room about four times tonight,” Scott says, “He isn’t there.”
“Well where on earth could he be?” Mrs. White asks dumbfounded and panicked, “Well don’t you worry about it. I’ll find him and when I do, there will be trouble.”
In the Library, Mr. Green and Mrs. Meadow-Brook sit silently in the red armchairs placed around the room. Miss Scarlet stands looking out the window with her arms crossed. She is smoking a cigarette from a quellazaire. Mrs. Peacock enters the Library followed by Chandler Weiss. Mrs. Peacock picks up a book and begins to skim through it. Chandler sits down on the ottoman next to the fireplace. The silence is broken by the rattle of the Library windows by thunder.
“Bad weather,” Mr. Green comments, “Back in America in rained once in a while. What is it with the constant rain in England?”
“As long as King George reigns the sky rains.” Chandler jokes
Everyone politely chuckles.
The Library doors open again and Mrs. Black and Mr. Meadow-Brook enter.
“A bit chilly in here.” Mrs. Black says rubbing her bare arms
“Another log?” Chandler asks from next to the fireplace
“If you’d be a dear,” Mrs. Black smiles, “Why so silent?”
“I think the weather has gotten everyone a bit on edge.” Mrs. Peacock says, “The power keeps causing the electricity to buzz on and off.”
“I do some of my best thinking in storms.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Something about sitting behind your desk during a thunder storm gives me the feel of a good old mystery novel. I do enjoy a good Sherlock Holmes from time to time.”
“Well,” Mrs. Black says, “Given the events over these past few days, I doubt any of us would like to think about mystery novels and what happens in them. If we must talk to literature, perhaps Shakespeare?”
“Sorry,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “That was insensitive of me. Though I find it ironic you mention Shakespeare, seeing how most of his books are tragedies.”
Mrs. Meadow-Brook rolls her eyes.
“That’s a lovely bracelet.” Mrs. Peacock says to Mrs. Meadow-Brook
“Oh, thank you.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says trying to hide the bruise slightly visible underneath.
In the Ballroom of Tudor Close, Jet Black stands at the back of the dark room near the windows. Lightning lightens up the room every now and again. Jet’s face is very tense. His jaws clenched tight and his knuckles white. In his hand is a long, sharp, antique Knife. In his light grey eyes there is fear, anger, and sorrow.
-FLASHBACK- EARLIER THAT DAY-
Jet Black stands with Jessica Meadow-Brook at the gravel road by Tudor Close.
“The Servant’s door is always unlocked.” Jet says, “Go up the service stairs turn right down a hallway. Open the door next to the grandfather clock and wait for me.”
“Where are you going?” asks Jessica
“I have a stop to make.” Jet says
“Jet,” Jessica says, “I love you.” She kisses him firmly on the lips. Jet pulls back in disbelief.
“Be careful not to get caught.” Jet says.
Jet walks in the opposite direction as Jessica. He walks down a street lined with small buildings. He kicks a stone absent mindedly into an alley as he walks. He notices a flock of birds scurrying from the forest near Tudor Close. He passes Ceil Drive and continues down Main Street as a soft rain begins to fall. He jogs to the Bisque Café as quickly as he can. He enters and wipes his face dry with his sleeve. He sees Mr. Thallo Green at a small table near the window drinking coffee. He walks over and sits down before him.
“Well, aren’t you prompt?” Mr. Green says
“I thought you didn’t want to be seen with me.” Jet says
“Who’s here to see?” Mr. Green motions to the empty café, “Not many people come to dine at seven in the morning. There’s only one waitress on duty this morning and she is a regular client of mine.”
“I’m sure you didn’t ask me to come down here for coffee and doughnuts.” Jet says
“Jeeze,” Mr. Green chuckles, “Always quick to the point, just like your father.”
“What do you want?” Jet asks getting annoyed
“Where’s my money?” asks Mr. Green taking a sip
“I don’t have it.” Jet says
“Well you better get it.” Mr. Green says, “I’m pretty sure you read enough books to know what happens when you screw over the mafia.”
“I can’t just hand over £3,000 in a heartbeat.” Jet defends
“Your family is rich.” Mr. Green says
“My father wouldn’t lend me any more than £50.” Jet says
“Well maybe you can find a way to wiggle into your inheritance early.” Mr. Green suggests
“My father would never agree to that.” Jet says
“What if something happens to him and the money is yours.” Mr. Green says sipping more coffe
“You mean kill my father.” Jet asks standing up
“Sit down, boy,” Mr. Green says laughing, “I’m merely suggesting that you be resourceful/ You do not want your little brother to go missing again do you? Make the right choice Jet.”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
Jet’s teeth grind tightly together as lightning illuminates the Ballroom once more. He looks down at the Knife in his hands and angrily throws it across the room. It slides underneath a divan. He then proceeds to cry as the rain forever beats against the windows of Tudor Close.
