In the Study of Tudor Close, Scott Black is sitting uncomfortably in the leather chair in front of his father’s desk. Jet Black leans against the bookcase with his arms cross. Dr. Black sits behind his desk holding his head in his hands.
“Scott, it is imperative that you tell me who kidnapped you. Your Uncle Lyle is a policeman. He can come and arrest the person that took you. Will that person be at the party tonight?” Dr. Black asks with determination
“You honestly don’t believe him do you?” asks Jet, “It’s completely insane why the kidnapped would let Scott see their face and not be alarmed!”
“I think I know why. This person threatened you.” Dr. Black says,
“Please, I want life to go back to normal. No one was harmed. Can we not just pretend this whole occurrence never happened?” asks Scott ringing his hands tighly, “Ms. Curry could have killed herself. Maybe the kidnapper took us there to protect us.”
“Christ, Scott!” Jet shouts, “This is not a game tell father who took you!”
Scott jumps out of the chair and shoves his brother, “I told you why I don’t want to say anything! You should explain it to him so I won’t have to go through that again!”
“Boys, I want you to go up to your rooms and don’t come down at all tonight. It’s too dangerous. I’ll have Mr. Ash sent you up dinner.” Dr. Black says
“This can’t seriously be happening?” asks Jet angrily
“Jet,” Dr. Black raises his voice, “I have I feeling I may know why these people are dying and it is all because of a mistake me and my sister made years ago.”
“What?” asks Jet as he begins to get frustrated
“Boys, go upstairs now.” Dr. Black says, “I’ll take care of it.”
In the Kitchen, Mrs. Blanche White tends to the super which is being prepared on the wooden table in the center of the room. Above the table, copper pots hang from the ceiling, glittering in the light. The cobblestone floor has been cleaned recently, as apparently by the shine of the stone. Mrs. White cuts carrots into thin slices as she finishes filling a large bowl of carrot wedges. She takes the bowl to a pan with a large roast in it. She pours the carrots around it with several dozen potatoes. She finishes added herbs and spices to the roast when Mr. Ash enters from the Service Staircase.
“Is everything ready?” he asks standing near the freezer.
“Yes, sir.” Mrs. White says pouring herself a quick glass of wine.
“Do you have your,” Mr. Ash clears his throat, “Instructions?”
Mrs. White nods silently as she swallows the alcohol slowly. Mr. Ash opens the window slightly.
“I remember back when the Kitchen did not have electricity yet,” Mr. Ash walks over to Mrs. White, “These dark stormy nights were challenging to make dinner. Either the lamps would blow out from the wind or the windows would remain shut and the Kitchen would be boiling hot.”
“Somehow we managed. Reggie,” Mrs. White says, “Be a dear and put the roast in the oven for me. My back is aching.”
Mr. Ash nods and does so while Mrs. White cuts wedges of cheese from a large wheel on the counter. She also cuts some fine sausage and bread and places them on a tray. She turns to Mr. Ash with the tray in hand. He takes it from her.
“Dr. Black will be receiving the guests in the Billiard Room for hors d’oeuvres and pre-dinner cocktails.” Mrs. White says opening the door to the Hall for him.
“Tell Mrs. Black that it is time for her to receive the guests.” Mr. Ash says as he exits the kitchen, “Also, if it comes up, mention to her that you are in on the plan.”
Mrs. White’s smile turns to a frown as Mr. Ash exits the Kitchen. Thunder rattles the hanging pots as the lights flicker and dim.
“If this keeps up, nature will do my job for me.” Mrs. White says to herself.
Mrs. White goes up the Service Staircase. She turns down the main upstairs hallway and knocks on a set of double doors. She hears a clatter then Mrs. Black opens the door just enough to see who is at the door.
“Mrs. White,” Mrs. Black says, “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“The guests will be arriving soon.” Mrs. White says, “I assume you want to be downstairs for the arrival.”
“Thank you, Mrs. White.” Mrs. Black says starting to reclose the door. Mrs. White puts her foot out to stop it from closing.
“Mrs. Black,” Mrs. White says, “I’m not going to pretend I understand exactly what you are doing, but Mr. Ash has given me my instructions to assist you with whatever it is going on.”
“What did he tell you exactly?” Mrs. Black asks stepping into the upstairs hallway and closing the door behind her.
“At 8 o’clock I shut off the electricity shoot the revolver into the Dining Room then wait in the Kitchen for the power to come back on.” Mrs. White says showing the small Pepperbox Revolver which is nestled snugly in her apron pocket, “I would very much appreciate understanding what this pertains to. This family has too many secrets. Too many lies.”
“Wait here.” Mrs. Black reenters her room. Mrs. White stands in the upstairs hallway with confusion. She turns and looks over the railing at the dimly lit Ground Floor Hall before her. The chime of the doorbell echoes softly through the mansion. She watches as Mr. Ash exits the Billiard Room and proceeds to answer the door. Mrs. Peacock and Miss Scarlet enter the hall as Mr. Ash removes their coats and hangs them in the Cloak Room, just off to the side of the Hall. Mrs. White continues to watch with nervousness as they are led to the Billiard Room. Thunder crashes loudly above the domed ceiling of the hall, causing the crystal chandelier to flicker and buzz. The house falls black. Mrs. White’s heart beats quickly in her throat in the darkness. The lights come back on just as quickly as they went off. She hears the muffled nervous laughter of Mr. Ash, Miss Scarlet, and Mrs. Peacock from the Billiard Room. She sighs with relief. Mrs. Black returns to the upstairs hallway with a small black book, bound with a rubber band.
“Blanche,” Mrs. Black says, “I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt. This has put me through so much pain and so much torment.”
“What is it?” asks Mrs. White looking nervously at the book.
“In the first three chapters of my diary, you will read everything there is to know about what happened the night Bryce died.” Mrs. Black says painfully, “What pains me the most,” she covers her mouth as she chokes back tears, “Is that so many people here tonight were here the same night Bryce died.”
“What?” Mrs. White asks with shock
“Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, Colonel Mustard, even Miss Scarlet as a child.” Mrs. Black says, “And Estelle…”
“The sister.” Mrs. White says fearfully.
“Few people knew about Estelle Black.” Mrs. Black says, “The psychopath that was responsible for the end of Bryce.”
“My god.” Mrs. White clutches the book tightly to her chest
“Come with me.” Mrs. Black leads her into the Master Bedroom where Mrs. White immediately sees a dirty, tattered, old trunk at the foot of the bed.
“What is that?”
Mrs. Black sighs and picks up the large coil of rope from her vanity and wraps it around the trunk, through the handles and around the padlock. She then takes three bricks from behind the trunk and attaches them to the ropes.
“Tonight’s the night.” Mrs. Black says cutting loose rope from the trunk and tossing it on the bed.
“Are you sure this is a good idea.” Dr. Hugh Black asks from the bedroom doorway as lightning crashes outside the window. Mrs. White jumps in fear.
“The police won’t suspect this to be done on a night with so many people present.” Mrs. Black says whipping her eyes
“Will someone please tell me what in the box?” Mrs. White asks as rain pounds with tremendous force on the windows of Tudor Close, thunder and lightning becoming more and more rapid.
“Sylvia,” Dr. Black says ignoring Mrs. White, “I’ve hired a police officer, a man named Sergeant Gray, to keep an eye around the manor in case of an attempt on my life.”
“Please!” Mrs. White pulls on Hugh Black’s arm in nervousness and fear, “What is going on here?”
Mrs. Black stands up from where she was kneeling at the chest, “It’s time for Bryce to rest for good.”
Mrs. White’s face turns as white as her apron as she notices the teddy bears and balloons carved into the side of the trunk, which was once a toy chest.
“No wonder Madame Rose wanted to leave in such haste.” Mrs. White says half to herself.
Downstairs, in the Hall, Mr. Ash opens the door to see Mr. Green close his umbrella as he enters the mansion.
“I got a bit worried.” Mr. Green chuckles nervously, “Right as I pulled up to the house the lights went off. I figured you were just pretending not to be home.”
Both men laugh as Mr. Ash removes Mr. Green’s coat.
“My my,” Mrs. Black says as her and Dr. Black come down the staircase, “Don’t you look handsome.”
Mrs. Black stretches out her hand to Mr. Green who kisses it politely. Mr. Green is wearing an expensive designer suit. Green pin stripe with a black tie and a red carnation in his left lapel.
“You clean up well.” Dr. Black pats him on the back.
“I actually have a bit of good news to you regarding our little business arrangement.” Mr. Green says to Dr. Black as he motions towards the Study door.
“Oh you men!” Mrs. Black says, “Business and politics is all that you discuss.”
“Actually, I don’t want to be rude to the other party guests.” Dr. Black says, “Perhaps after dinner?”
“You men go ahead.” Mrs. Black says, “There probably are not that many guests here yet. I’ll chat with who ever has already arrived.”
“It won’t be long.” Mr. Green says, “I promise.”
Dr. Black complies and leads Mr. Green to his Study. The curtains are open but only give the view of the a watery window and the occasional white flash of lightning. The large desk is neatly set with pen sets, marble busts, letter openers, and stacks of blank paper.
“Have a seat.” Dr. Black motions to the leather armchair in front of his desk, “Can I get you something to drink.”
“I’ll have a brandy if it is not too much trouble.” Mr. Green says
Dr. Black fixes him a brandy at the other end of the Study, near the fireplace. He hands it to Mr. Green and takes his seat behind his desk.
“I told a little white lie.” Mr. Green admits slyly as he gulps the brandy
“We talked about lying!” Dr. Black feigns anger
Mr. Green chuckles, “But by lying, I saved your ass.”
Dr. Black sits forward, “Do tell.”
“I told Miles Meadow-Brook that two-thirds of the money in the Swiss Bank Account was mine.” Mr. Green says
“That was our arrangement.” Dr. Black says, “If anyone asks the money is yours.”
“It’s a lot of money too.” Mr. Green says
“I am aware.” Dr. Black says, “I put it in there.”
“Jane knows.” Mr. Green says
“I knew it was only a matter of time.” Dr. Black says
“She burned the papers. The only copy of the bank accounts admission number.” Mr. Green says gulping the remainder of his drink.
“Bloody hell,” Dr. Black stands up and begins to pace behind his desk
“Before you worry.” Mr. Green reaches into his front pocket, “She managed to write them down so she could claim the money. Miles forced her to give it to him. I place it in your hands.”
Dr. Black snatches it quickly from Mr. Green’s hand and looks over the numbers quickly, “Are you sure these are the numbers?”
“Yes.” Mr. Green says, “They look correct to me.”
Dr. Black pushes a book on his bookshelf which slides open to reveal a secret passageway.
“Hugh Black!” Mr. Green stands up and claps his hands with excitement, “You never told me you had a secret door.”
“It leads to the kitchen.” Dr. Black says motioning to the stone stairs leading down. Directly through the opening in the wall is a built in safe. He does the combination and puts the paper inside. He closes the safe and then the secret passageway.
“Why the kitchen?” asks Mr. Green, “For a late night snack?”
“My grandfather, Lieutenant General Archibald Raventhorn built it when he was having an affair with his housekeeper.” Dr. Black says
“Scandalous.” Mr. Green says
“I remember I would play hide and seek in there and my sisters would never be able to find me.” Dr. Black chuckles as he reminisces, “It always angered my father though; playing in his private Study. He was so proud to finally be in a rich family. He grew up rather poor as you probably remember hearing that story before.”
Mr. Green nods, “Shall head off to the Billiard Room?”
In the Billiard Room, Mr. Ash is playing snooker against Mrs. Peacock.
“I never lose, darling.” Mrs. Peacock says sinking another ball.
“Mr. Ash,” Mrs. Black chuckles from the bar with Miss Scarlet, “I never knew you were a snooker player.”
“Oh I play in my spare time.” Mr. Ash chuckles, “Not against someone with such a good aim however.”
Mrs. Black sips from her martini, “It’s fun to see you get out of your shell! We are all so used to you being an uptight butler!”
“I’m so used to observing the guests playing as I make the cocktails.” Mr. Ash chuckles as he takes his turn. He misses the pocket by an inch, “Blast!”
Dr. Black and Mr. Green enter the Billiard Room.
“Reggie,” Dr. Black is taken back by the butler playing snooker, “An avid pool shark?”
“Oh, allow me to fix you a dry martini sir,” Mr. Ash resumes to his butler duties and walks behind the bar, “What will it be for Mr. Green?”
“No, no.” Dr. Black smiles, “Have some fun. Play billiards! This is a time for celebration. Everyone should have a little fun.”
Mrs. Black and Dr. Black make eye contact for a brief moment.
“Can I get you anything else, Thallo?” Dr. Black says stepping behind the bar.
“Just a good beer.” Mr. Green says, “To wash down the brandy.”
“Interesting mix.” Mrs. Black says, “You’ll be drunk before dinner.”
“Oh, you definitely want to be sober for dinner.” Mrs. Peacock says, “I would kill for Mrs. White’s cooking! That woman is the goddess of cooking! I am so envious that you hired her before I had a chance to.”
“I’ll make sure she hears that.” Mr. Ash says taking another shot.
“My, my,” Mrs. Peacock says teasingly, “Two points for Reggie here, another seven for me.”
“Madame,” Mr. Ash says, “Your skills are far better than my own.”
“I believe the wager was £5.” Mrs. Peacock says
Mr. Ash reaches in his pocket and hands the money to Mrs. Peacock.
“Always a pleasure.” Mrs. Peacock playfully tickles him under the chin
“Dry martinis anyone?” Mr. Ash says as the doorbell rings, “Oh, hold that thought.”
“He is in a surprisingly cheerful mood.” Miss Scarlet says to Mrs. Black, “Every time I see him he is dry and tired and hovers over the guests like a body guard.”
“Once you get to know him he’s quite fun actually.” Dr. Black says, “He always has a good joke when I’m stressed with work.”
“Our housekeeper won’t lighten up around anyone.” Mrs. Peacock says, “She bows and curtseys to everyone who enters my home.”
Mr. Ash returns with Miles and Jane Meadow-Brook. Jane’s eyes are swollen as if she has been crying. Miles is as cheerful as ever. Jane walks over the bar and approaches Mrs. Black.
“Glad you could make it, Jane.” Mrs. Black says as she sips her martini
“I wanted to apologize for my behavior the other day.” Jane says with a quivering voice, “I shouldn’t have lost my temper so much with you.”
“Let’s just let bygones be bygones and enjoy the night,” Mrs. Black says, “I apologize for my lack of discretion.”
“It’s just been a rough few days for us all.” Jane says as tears begin to fall from her eyes, “What with the murders and the betrayal.”
Miss Scarlet puts her hand sympathetically on Jane’s shoulder, “Try to think happy thoughts, dear.”
Jane forces a smile and sees Miss Scarlet’s hand, “You’re getting married?”
“Oh my! How did I miss noticing that!” Mrs. Black says as she and Mrs. Meadow-Brook gush with enthusiasm
“Now, now,” Miss Scarlet says, “I was hoping to announce it over dinner.”
“Who’s the lucky man?” Jane asks pulling herself from her own misery
“Chandler Weiss.” Miss Scarlet says giggling, “I can’t wait until I’m Mrs. Cynthia Weiss.”
“It has a nice ring to it.” Mrs. Black says, “A name like that is definitely welcome in my social circle.”
“And it will look beautiful when you name is written in lights! Your singing fame is certainly on the way! Is he coming tonight?” asks Jane Meadow-Brook
“He was invited.” Miss Scarlet says, “I haven’t seen much of him today. Probably training.”
“Well, Cynthia,” Mrs. Black points to the window, “I don’t mean to sound blunt but it has been raining nonstop.”
“Well I’m sure he is just telling his family. His mother is abroad and he must be finding a way to get in touch with her.” Miss Scarlet says, “He probably will be here tonight.”
“I hope he is.” Mrs. Black smiles
Across town, at the Hampshire Hospital, Miss Emily Peach sits nervously in the waiting room with Chandler Weiss.
“Thank you so much for sitting with me.” Miss Peach says nervously, “But don’t you have a party to go to? What brought you to the hospital.”
“I was just expressing my sympathy to Sabata Bronce,” Chandler says, “I saw you rush in with the paramedics and new I had to sit with you. To be honest I would rather delay the events I am going to endure at the party as long as possible.”
“My head is spinning so quickly.” Miss Peach becomes dizzy, “I’m just so confused,”
“It’s going to be okay.” Chandler says holding Miss Peach’s hand
“I’m pregnant with a married man’s child, my father doesn’t want anything to do with me, and he might die before I even get to know him.” Miss Peach says sadly
“Shhh.” Chandler hushes Miss Peach as he puts his arm around her, “It’s all going to get better, you’ll see.”
“You are such a compassionate person. I wish I would have found you before I slept around with a married man. You are much more my type of man.” Miss Peach rests her head on his shoulder
Chandler realizes right there in the middle of the waiting room that Miss Scarlet, Mrs. Peacock, and Miss Peach are falling in love with him and he would have to break two of their hearts and if he did not arrive at the party, Mrs. Peacock would tell Miss Scarlet about their past affair.
