Episode 50 – “Questions and Answers”
Previously on the Memoirs of Mayfield: Lord Grey is stopped by Mr. Green who comes in at the nick of time to protect his son. Professor Plum knocks out Rusty and prepares to asphyxiate him with a running car in the Garage when Rusty wakes Rusty up and tells Professor Plum to just kill Meadow-Brook rather than going to such drastic measures to please his blackmailer. Scott Black walks into the Conservatory and is taken captive with Sylvia and Mr. Ash. Mrs. Meadow-Brook spills out her feelings to Mr. Green explaining that she is sick of Miles and she never wants to see him again. Mr. Green agrees to kill him and make it look like an accident. In the Garden, all the guests, sans the Meadow-Brooks and Miss Peach, are caught in the explosion from the bomb Prince Azure planted…

- Dusk-
The Garden is empty. The last rays of sunlight shine on the broken fountain. Water is no longer spraying from the busted pipe. Pieces of concrete are scattered about the Garden. Tulips are destroyed, the hedges are erratic, and puddles of water are ruining the nicely manicured lawns. The main focus of activity is not in this Garden however…
Behind Tudor Close in the Rose Garden a wheel barrel containing a black tarp stands in the center of the floral area. The limp, pale hand of a man dangles from the black tarp. Near the back of the Rose Garden Rusty Naylor digs a hole in the ground. Seven other people stand around him.
“At least this time we know the body we are burying is dead,” Mrs. White says
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Professor Plum asks nervously
“If we get Inspector Brown involved he’ll find out our secrets.” Miss Scarlet says
“We don’t want that,” Mrs. Peacock says clutching on to Colonel Mustard’s arm
“Are you okay?” Mr. Green asks his sister, Jane Meadow-Brook who is standing in the shadows with her arms stiffly crossed.
“Gentlemen,” Rusty finishes digging the hole, “Are we ready?”
Colonel Mustard and Mr. Green roll the wheel barrel over to the hole and lower the tarp into the hole. Jane Meadow-Brook takes off her wedding ring and tosses it into the hole on top of the tarp.
“Goodbye Miles,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “I wish things could have been different.”
“Jane,” Mr. Green puts his hand on her shoulder
“I’m fine,” Jane says, “If he didn’t want to be murdered he would have been more tactful. He brought this on himself.”
“I should probably get to the hospital and check on Roxanne,” Professor Plum says to Mrs. Peacock
“She hit her head rather hard after the explosion.” Mrs. Peacock says, “Besides, you could use an alibi for tonight. You seem terribly jittery.”
“I don’t handle murder well.” Professor Plum says
“Wait one minute,” Colonel Mustard stops Professor Plum from moving, “Aren’t we forgetting one thing?”
“What is that?” asks Mr. Green as he dusts off his hands
“It’s a rather obvious question,” Colonel Mustard chortles
Everyone is silent as the sound of evening crickets begins to grow louder as the Rose Garden gets darker and darker by the moment.
“I think,” Mrs. White clears her throat, “What Colonel Mustard is trying to point out…”
“Which of us killed him,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook finishes her sentence
There is another moment of silence.
“I’m rather confused as to how he died,” Professor Plum says, “I mean there is clearly trauma to the head.”
“I hit him with a bucket earlier.” Mrs. Peacock says
“But he didn’t have a wound like that.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “I saw Mrs. Peacock hit him, he was alive afterwards.”
“Is it possible that the blow to the head with the bucket causes a brain hemorrhage?” Colonel Mustard says, “He could have collapsed later from the earlier injury and hit his head which caused the wound.”
“I suppose that’s a possibility.” Mr. Green says pulling out a cigar and lighting it. Mrs. White scoffs at the odor.
“So I killed him?” Mrs. Peacock looks around the group
“It wouldn’t be the first time you killed anyone in Hampshire.” Miss Scarlet says mockingly
“Shut up, Cynthia.” Mrs. Peacock snaps
“Option two,” Colonel Mustard speaks over the arguing women, “One of us finished him off. We all had reason to.”
“Plum?” Rusty turns to Professor Plum
“What?” Professor Plum snaps his head to Rusty’s direction with nervousness
“Plum tried to kill me earlier.” Rusty says indifferently, “He informed me that Meadow-Brook wanted me dead. I told Plum to kill that blackmailer rather than stooping to his levels and taking orders from him.”
Everyone turns their attention to Professor Plum.
“Yes it’s true!” Professor Plum says, “I tried to kill Rusty because Miles threatened to expose me. Rusty set me straight. He told me that it would be better to kill the bully than to do what the bully wants and keep being bullied.”
“So did you kill him?” asks Mrs. White
-FLASHBACK- EARLIER THAT DAY-
Professor Plum watches Rusty walk away from him. He clutches onto the Tennis Racquet and angrily walks towards the Garden. He sees Mrs. Meadow-Brook standing distracted looking towards the Gate House and Stable.
“Jane,” Professor Plum says carelessly trying to hold the Tennis Racquet inconspicuously
“Professor,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook turns to him, “What can I do for you?”
“I would like to speak with Miles.” Professor Plum says
“You are too late,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “He left.”
“He left?” Professor Plum says, “He was playing Tennis less than half an hour ago.”
“He left after the divorce announcement.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says
“Do you know where I can find him?” Professor Plum asks
“Don’t bother trying to find him,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “He always shows up when you least expect him to. No doubt he’ll be seen again today.”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“So you just left it at that?” asks Mr. Green, “You didn’t go to look for him?”
“No,” Professor Plum says
“What about the Tennis Racquet?” Colonel Mustard asks, “It is a blunt object which means it is a probable weapon.”
“I think I must have set it down on my way to the Swimming Pool,” Professor Plum says, “I went there to get some air.”
“Mrs. Meadow-Brook,” Mrs. White turns to Mrs. Meadow-Brook, “Where did Miles exactly say he was going.”
Mrs. Meadow-Brook glares at Mrs. White for a few moments, “He said he had to go.” She says sternly, “He told me he was going to leave. You were quite near actually.”
“I was?” Mrs. White asks
“Yes,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “You passed right by us and went into the Stable.”
Mrs. White is silent for a few moments, “I was a bit intoxicated. I’m not entirely sure my memory is accountable.”
“Jane,” Mr. Green says, “Everyone else is coming clean, we might as well tell them our encounter in the Gate House.”
“It was actually shortly after Miles left.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says taking a deep breath, “I wanted him dead. I didn’t want to put up with the pain of the divorce settlements. I wanted to be done with him and his wicked ways. I told Thallo to kill him.”
“She was very strong about this.” Mr. Green says
“Did you kill him?” asks Miss Scarlet
“I wanted to.” Mr. Green says, “I found a cast iron Horseshoe. I was planning on bashing his head in.”
“Ironic since that’s how he was killed.” Colonel Mustard says
“But not with a horseshoe.” Mr. Green points out
“That hasn’t exactly been proven or disproven.” Mrs. Peacock says, “It very well could have been the Horseshoe that killed Miles.”
“I never found Miles.” Mr. Green says
“Well not if he left the party.” Professor Plum says
“Don’t be stupid, Uncle Greg,” Miss Scarlet sighs, “Miles never left the party. That was Mrs. Meadow-Brook’s lie since she and Mr. Green were planning on snuffing him.”
“You weren’t even invited to this party.” Mrs. White says to Mr. Green, “What brought you here, aside from the plans to kill Miles.”
“Actually I had no intentions of murdering Miles.” Mr. Green says, “I came here to talk to Sylvia.”
“Another pathetic attempt to win her heart over?” Mrs. Peacock scoffs
Mr. Green looks at her with a dumbfounded expression
“People gossip,” Mrs. Peacock says, “I’m fairly certain we all know by now that you are Jet’s father.”
“It was actually in the diary.” Mrs. White says, “It mostly contained facts on Bryce, but there was a segment about Mr. Green and Sylvia’s love.”
Mrs. Meadow-Brook’s mood shifts when she hears mention of Bryce (Jessica).
“I came here to ask Sylvia for the keys to Hugh’s New York Penthouse.” Mr. Green admits, “A former business partner of mine is on the run and he is residing in New York.”
“So you were planning on snuffing him too?” asks Colonel Mustard
“I wouldn’t talk so loud about snuffing people,” Mr. Green gets in Colonel Mustard’s face
“What is that supposed to mean?” asks Colonel Mustard
“A game hunter such as yourself must have encountered some illegal trading,” Mr. Green says
“What makes you jump to that conclusion?” Colonel Mustard barks angrily as Mrs. Peacock places her hand on him arm
“Nothing,” Mr. Green says, “But by your reaction to my question, I’m pretty sure I know the answer now.”
“This still doesn’t answer the question of who murdered Miles,” Rusty clears his throat
“What about you?” Professor Plum points at Rusty, “You seemed so keen on the idea of talking me into murdered Miles. Why did you want him dead?”
“I didn’t. I don’t.” Rusty stammers, “I was just trying to save my own life.”
“I think there is something he is leaving out.” Miss Scarlet says
The last bits of sunlight fade away and leave everyone in pitch darkness. The light from the mansion lightens up the Rose Garden enough for them to see each other’s faces, however. Rusty begins to cover the hole with dirt as he avoids answering the question.
“Last Monday,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “Rusty had dinner with me. The topic of lethal poisons came up. Rusty asked me if I’ve ever thought of giving Miles a nice poison.”
“Jane,” Rusty stops shoveling dirt
“He told me he was desperately in love with me.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook blurts out, “He told me he’s always loved me…” her voice trails off
“Did you return the same feelings?” asks Mrs. Peacock
“Miles was in the way and Rusty knew that.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says
“But did you love him too?” asks Mrs. Peacock
“No,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “I’m sorry, Rusty. I just don’t return the same feelings. We are from two different worlds.”
“Bitch!” Mrs. White spits angrily
Everyone snaps their attention to Mrs. White
“Blanche,” Mrs. Peacock gasps
“You think just because you have money and we servants don’t that there is no way to be happy?” Mrs. White indicts herself and Rusty
“Mrs. White,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook walks over to Mrs. White, “This doesn’t have anything to do with our past feud?”
“Feud?” Mrs. Peacock is intrigued, “I didn’t realize that you and Mrs. White had a problem with each other.”
“It was a long time ago.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “I thought we were over it.”
“That’s because you got your way!” Mrs. White says, “It was over for you because you got what you wanted.”
“I’m very confused.” Mrs. Peacock says
“She had a brief romance with Miles.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook scoffs
“We were in love!” Mrs. White says, “Miles and I were in love with each other! Then you came along, young and beautiful. We both know he had a weakness for young sexy women!”
“Unfortunately,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook glares at Miss Scarlet
“You stole him from me in the same way Emily stole Miles from you.” Mrs. White says
Mrs. Meadow-Brook slaps Mrs. White across the face.
“You think you are superior to me because of your money?” Mrs. White says, “You are just as wicked as Miles. You turned down Rusty because he’s not rich enough for you.”
“Rusty and I have nothing in common!” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says
“Stop talking about me!” Rusty says, “I’m right here. I can hear you! Stop talking about me like I’m not even here!”
There is a moment of silence, filled with tension. Rusty resumes to shoveling dirt over Miles Meadow-Brook’s body.
“Does it even matter who killed him?” Miss Scarlet asks, “All that matters is that he’s gone and we don’t have to worry about him anymore.”
“Cynthia is right.” Mrs. Peacock says, “It doesn’t matter anymore.”
“Whoever it is saved us more stress and trouble.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “Thank you… whoever you are.”
Inside Tudor Close, in the Conservatory, Inspector Winfield Brown looks around the room.
“I’m not sure how the escape was carried out.” Inspector Brown says to Mr. Boddy who stands in the doorway.
“They couldn’t have gotten far.” Mr. Boddy says
“I can’t believe Scott Black is missing again,” Inspector Brown says, “Only this time with his mother and the butler.”
“Jet and Madame Rose are in the Lounge.” Mr. Boddy says, “I’m not sure they can be any help.”
“I need as much help as I can.” Inspector Brown says exiting the Conservatory and heading to the Lounge. He sees Jet and Madame Rose sitting together with worried looks on their faces. Officer Ebony stands in the corner just as nervous and worried as Jet and Madame Rose.
“When is the last time you saw any of them?” Inspector Brown asks
“I saw Scott sometime before the explosion.” Jet says, “He wanted to talk to me but I kept brushing him away.”
“It’s not your fault.” Inspector Brown says
“If I’d just talked to him he wouldn’t have been kidnapped.” Jet says
“You can’t think like that.” Inspector Brown says, “If it’s the same man that kidnapped him last time he would have gone to any means to take him again. He may have taken you too.”
“At least I’d know where he is… or if he’s alive.” Jet says with fear and sickness in his eyes
“The positive side to all of this,” Inspector Brown clears his throat, “If it is the same man that kidnapped Scott last time he should be sticking near Hampshire. We will catch this madman and find Mr. Ash, Scott, and Sylvia.”
“So until then we sit around waiting for answers.” Jet says
“I may have a way to help get us some answers,” Madame Rose says turning to Inspector Brown, “If you are willing to partake in it?”
“I will give you my time.” Officer Ebony says, “Sylvia is my sister! I will do anything to bring her back safe and sound.”
“Then perhaps we should go to the Dining Room.” Madame Rose says mystically
At Hampshire County Hospital, Roxanne Prussian has stitches on her forehead. She lies on a hospital bed staring out the window at the night sky. There is a knock on the door and her husband enters.
“Rex,” she whispers softly
“Roxanne,” Dr. Rex Prussian walks over to her beside, “Nurse Primrose told me everything.”
“The good news is that I’m the only serious injury from the explosion.” Mrs. Prussian says
“Why did you go to Tudor Close today?” asks Dr. Prussian
“I don’t see what all the fuss is about.” Mrs. Prussian says, “I just wanted to go to Sylvia’s silly little garden party.”
“If you would have listened to me you wouldn’t have gotten hurt.” Dr. Prussian says sitting on the edge of her bed.
“I’m fine,” Mrs. Prussian says, “Honestly. It looks worse than it feels.”
In the doorway of her hospital room Professor Plum stands in silence.
Across town at Dr. Olive’s flat, Dr. Glen Olive enters through the front door to see Miss Peach smiling from the sofa holding a piece of paper in her hand.
“How was the garden party?” asks Dr. Olive
“It was interesting,” Miss Peach says
“Any news on finding Helena?” Dr. Olive asks
“Dear Claire,” Miss Peach reads from the paper in her hand, “It’s been a long time and I’m sorry for the way I’ve left things. I know your psychic gift has probably aided you in realizing the truth about my disappearance. I wish I wouldn’t have left things so cryptic with your father. I plan on coming to Hugh’s funeral. Come and find me at the Boat House. I was over-whelmed with grief to learn that Estelle was killed. She was always the strongest of you children. Don’t pull any stunts at the Boat House. I just want to talk.”
“Wow,” Dr. Olive exclaims
“It’s signed ‘mother’.” Miss Peach says
“When was it sent?” asks Dr. Olive
“April 16th,” Miss Peach says
“Helena has been in Hampshire recently.” Dr. Olive observes
“It would appear so.” Miss Peach says, “Maybe we should pay Madame Rose another visit.”
At the Oakwood House, Lady Oakwood stands in the bathroom rubbing white skin cream on her face. She stops and becomes ill. She coughs and heaves into the sink. She coughs up a small amount of blood. She steadies herself on the marble counter and looks at her reflection.
“What is happening to me?” she whispers
Downstairs in the Kitchen, Mr. Crimson, the butler, finishes setting the dishes in the drying rack as Percival Oakwood enters the room.
“Mr. Oakwood,” Mr. Crimson nods to him
“Everyone has retired for the night,” Percival smirks, “You can drop the formalities.”
Mr. Crimson smiles and sits down at the table.
“Mrs. Crabtree was taking inventory of the medicine cabinet.” Mr. Crimson says
“Did she notice the laudanum is decreasing?” asks Percival
“She didn’t say anything.” Mr. Crimson says
“Once my mother’s health declines once and for all we will have enough money to leave this hell hole.” Percival says putting his hands on the butler’s shoulders
“And we can finally be together.” Mr. Crimson closes his eyes as Percival’s lips meet his own.
At Tudor Close, in the Dining Room, Inspector Brown sits down uncomfortably at the Dining Room table. Officer Ebony closes his eyes and exhales deeply. Mr. Boddy places a vase of white narcissus in the center of thee table
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Inspector Brown asks
“You said you wanted answers.” Madame Rose says playing a deck on Tarot Cards on the table as she takes a seat at the head of the table. Jet sits down next to Inspector Brown. Mr. Boddy finishes lighting the candles in the silver Candlesticks. He turns off the lights and takes a seat on the other side of Madame Rose.
“It’s time to summon the spirit of Hugh Black,” Madame Rose closes her eyes meditatively
