-Saturday, May 14, 1949 –
-Early Afternoon-
The music of the string quartet flows from the central garden of the grounds of Tudor Close as guests dressed in their finest begin to pour in. From the Terrace Sylvia Black stands with Mr. Ash and her two boys.
“A perfect entrance.” Mr. Ash nods offering her a glass of champagne from his tray.
“Thank you,” Sylvia says taking a drink
Jet and Scott both watch as the guests mill about.
“What are you staring at?” Scott asks
“Nothing?” Jet says quickly taking his eyes off Lady Lavender.
“It’s that girl in the purple kimono isn’t it?” Scott asks
Jet brushes past his brother and walks down the Terrace steps closer to the Garden where the string quartet plays. He takes in a deep breath of air as he watches Lady Lavender play her instrument with such grace and delicacy.
“Sylvia,” Lady Oakwood says as she climbs the terrace stairs. Percival Oakwood stands at the foot of the stairs with his wheelchair-bound father.
“Lady Oakwood,” Sylvia says, “It’s so nice of you to come.”
“Thank you,” Lady Oakwood says, “It’s such a beautiful day for a party too!”
“Yes,” Sylvia says
“The only thing that would make it perfect would be if Hugh was here to bask in the joy of it with you.” Lady Oakwood says, “I’m so terribly sorry for his passing. He will be greatly missed by the community. I have no idea what I would do if my husband died. I just wouldn’t find the will to live. I just love him too much. But I guess we all grieve differently. You seemed to manage. Probably sedatives. Sedating yourself is always the best way to keep up appearances. Well I’m off to socialize. I hear that the Meadow-Brook have hit their final bump in their marriage and are going to announce their divorce today. I have to be there for it when it happens. I love being on top of my gossip.” She coughs coarsely, “I’m sure you love your gossip too. Well I’m off. I’ll catch you later.”
With that Lady Oakwood heads back down the stairs and directs her son and husband into the direction of the Gazebo.
“She’s an interesting character.” Mr. Ash says
“A different word springs to mind.” Sylvia says finishing the rest of her champagne and putting the empty glass on the tray. She turns towards the open French windows leading into the Billiard Room.
“Where are you going?” asks Mr. Ash
“To use the little girl’s room,” Sylvia says, “That champagne runs right through me.”
Sylvia Black enters the Billiard Room and quickly passes through it and enters the Hall. She goes to the Conservatory and closes the door. She opens her purse and pulls out her morphine filled syringe. She sighs and injects it into her arm. In the reflection of the glass panes of the Conservatory windows she sees the ghostly figure of Hugh Black behind her. There is a look of disappointment on his face.
“I’m doing what I have to Hugh,” Sylvia says closing her eyes, “I know you wouldn’t approve but what choice do I have? You abandoned your family. You got involved in the wrong crowd which caused your death. If you would have done things legally and ethically I wouldn’t have to suffer this alone.” Sylvia pulls the Syringe out and drops it into her purse. She turns around and finds that Hugh is once again gone. She walks over to the wicker chairs as she legs become wobbly from the effects of the morphine. She slowly sinks into a wicker chair and exhales deeply.
On the sidewalk around the Garden of Tudor Close, Miss Scarlet and Professor Plum walk together while Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard proceed them. Miss Scarlet looks up at the place where the gargoyle fell in April.
“I hope Chandler isn’t here.” Miss Scarlet says, “Though I doubt Sylvia would invite him.”
“I thought you actually wanted things to work out between the two of you?” asks Professor Plum
“It’s a fantasy.” Miss Scarlet says, “I’m cursed when it comes to love. He’ll never forgive me and I don’t want to be subjected to a stroppy conversation with him. Maybe it’s karma for ruining other’s relationships.”
“I don’t believe in karma,” Professor Plum says, “I believe anything can change at any time.”
“I went to Madame Rose a few weeks ago and she told me that my love line was broken and gaped. She said there was some sort of missing piece.” Miss Scarlet says rubbing her palm tenderly
“I wouldn’t buy too much into Madame Rose’s psychic predictions. She doesn’t exactly get important visions. I mean she tends to tune out when a murder is about to occur.” Professor Plum says
“Hopefully.” Miss Scarlet says looking over at Madame Rose who stands in the Gazebo with a champagne flute in her hand.
At the Gazebo, Madame Rose takes a sip of champagne as she watches the guests and workers mingle and chat. She is dress in an obvious contrast to everyone else at the party. She has a small cloth pouch attached to her belt which holds her tarot cards. She looks towards the Gazebo steps as Mr. Meadow-Brook and Mrs. Meadow-Brook walk towards her, arm in arm. Madame Rose is confused by their outward appearance of contentment with each other.
“Claire,” Mr. Meadow-Brook greets her, “It’s so good to see you.”
“Miles,” Madame Rose holds our her bejeweled hand which he kisses, “It is primarily accustomed to kiss the ruby.”
Mr. Meadow-Brook shrugs and kisses her ruby ring.
“My what a lovely dress that is,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook feigns a smile, “Where ever did you get it?”
“Hungary.” Madame Rose says, “I lived in Hungary for fourteen years. It is there that I had my first psychic vision and found my calling.”
“How intriguing.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “Well I would love to see what you see in my future sometime.”
“Have a seat.” Madame Rose motions to a table
“Oh no,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “Not today. I wouldn’t want to be anti-social at the party. Perhaps another day.”
“Perhaps for some of us the future is quite short and some other day may never come.” Madame Rose says darkly.
Mrs. Meadow-Brook is taken back, “Well maybe a brief one.” She sits down at the table.
“Come find me when you are ready.” Mr. Meadow-Brook whispers to Madame Rose, “I’m going to get started.”
At the Fountain, Colonel Mustard and Mrs. Peacock have separated from Miss Scarlet and Professor Plum and walk down the path towards the Fountain. The statuette atop the fountain is cupid; the water pouring from his mouth.
“It’s a nice day for a garden party.” Mrs. Peacock says, “A nice fresh breeze.”
“Pollen,” Colonel Mustard says with an upturned nose
“Are you alright, dear?” asks Mrs. Peacock, “You seem to be in a very unsettled mood today.”
“I’m a bit distracted.” Colonel Mustard says, “I had a bad encounter with Meadow-Brook the other day.”
“Jane?” Mrs. Peacock asks, “I know she can be a bit gossipy but I’m sure she doesn’t mean any harm.”
“Miles,” Colonel Mustard says
“Miles?” Mrs. Peacock is shocked, “What did he say?”
“The bastard blackmailed me.” Colonel Mustard takes a seat at the bench by the fountain.
“Blackmail?” Mrs. Peacock sits next to him, “What ever for?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Colonel Mustard says, “Because I know he won’t interfere anymore. I’m giving in to what he wants. That way we can both live happily ever after.”
“Ever after?” Mrs. Peacock places her hand on her chest and smiles
Colonel Mustard gets down on one knee and pulls out the silver ring with the large blue diamond.
“Penelope Peacock,” Colonel Mustard says, “I wish for you to be my wife. Will you do be the honors of granting me that wish?”
Mrs. Peacock stares silently at the ring. A series of visions go through her head.

At the Swimming Pool, Miss Scarlet walks over to the edge of the pool and takes off her high heels. She lets her feet dangle into the water as she takes a sip of champagne from the glass she acquired from a random caterer. Mr. Meadow-Brook enters the Swimming Pool to see Miss Scarlet with her back to him.
“What a clean pool.” Mr. Meadow-Brook remarks, startling Miss Scarlet
“Jesus, you scared me.” Miss Scarlet gasps setting her glass down on the edge of the pool and standing up.
“You’d better dry your feet.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “I wouldn’t want you to slip and fall.”
“What do you want Miles?” asks Miss Scarlet
“You know what I want.” Mr. Meadow-Brook puts his hand to her cheek and leans in to kiss her. Miss Scarlet slaps him across the face. Mr. Meadow-Brook sighs and grabs her by the shoulders.
“Please,” she begs, “Let me go.”
“I saw you murder that old woman.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “I thought I made it clear that I would stay silent if you show me a little kindness. A kiss is all I ask.”
Miss Scarlet leans forward and emotionlessly kisses him on the lips, “Are you happy now?”
“Are you?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook
“Of course not.” Miss Scarlet says
“Well you better learn how to fake your happiness with me.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “If I start becoming unsatisfied with our mutual relationship…”
“Yes I know!” Miss Scarlet says, “You’ll run your mouth about what I did.”
“Exactly.” Mr. Meadow-Brook holds her chin, “You are such a beautiful girl.”
He turns and exits the Swimming Pool towards the Garden. Mrs. Peacock comes from around the shrubbery.
“What on earth was that?” Mrs. Peacock asks in horror
“I don’t want to talk about it.” Miss Scarlet says shivering
Mrs. Peacock covers up her engagement ring with her right hand, “Do you want me to talk to him?”
“He saw me murder Ms. Hawthorne.” Miss Scarlet says
“You should have told me.” Mrs. Peacock says, “He is harassing you with sexual blackmail, isn’t he?”
“What can I do?” asks Miss Scarlet, “Either I am charged with murder, or fondled by a disgusting old man for the rest of my life.”
“I’m going to talk to him.” Mrs. Peacock says exiting the Swimming Pool in the direction Miles went.
At the Gate House, Mr. Ash shakes hands with the Mayor, Olivia Cerise.
“Mayor Cerise,” Mr. Ash says warmly, “It is so good of you to attend this party.”
“I adore Hugh and Sylvia’s garden parties…” the mayor stops short, “I’m sorry, I had forgotten that Hugh passed away recently.”
“Yes it has been a difficult time for us all.” Mr. Ash says
“My condolences.” Mayor Cerise says
“Thank you,” Mr. Ash nods
“Where can I find the hostess?” Mayor Cerise asks
“Well,” Mr. Ash looks around the immaculate garden, “I think she may have run inside the house to check on things. I will send her your way as soon as I find her.”
“Wonderful,” Mayor Cerise says as she waves to a crowd of high society patrons and joins them near the string quartet.
In the Gazebo, Madame Rose holds Mrs. Meadow-Brook’s hands as she focuses on her psychic messages.
“A black veil, a mourning shawl, a reunion with those who have gone, and a man with blood on his hands,” Madame Rose says softly
“Who is this man?” asks Mrs. Meadow-Brook
“He is someone familiar to us both. A man with bright fiery eyes…” Madame Rose says
“I have been mourning the loss of my daughter,” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “And my husband and I… well,”
“Your marriage is about to end.” Madame Rose says
“It’s already over,” Jane says, “At least for now, maybe later in life when we are at a good place in our hearts…”
“It’s over.” Madame Rose says solemnly, “By forces beyond your control it is over.”
Mrs. Meadow-Brook glances over at Miles Meadow-Brook who stands near the Tennis Courts talking with Miss Peach and Professor Plum.
At the Tennis Courts, Professor Plum grabs a Tennis Racquet from the bench.
“Tennis isn’t my best game.” He admits to Miss Peach
“Oh, it’s so simple.” Miss Peach says, “You just swing when the ball comes near you.”
“I prefer golf.” Professor Plum says, “The ball doesn’t move until I’m ready for it to move.”
“Tennis gets your heart pumping.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “It’s good for you. It keeps you going.”
Mr. Meadow-Brook serves the ball and Professor Plum runs to hit it but trips over his own feet.
“Damn,” he grabs his ankle
“Are you alright?” asks Miss Peach chuckling
“Can you go get some ice from Mrs. White?” asks Professor Plum
“Of course,” she leaves
“You are rather careless aren’t you.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“I’m new to Tennis.” Professor Plum says, “Besides, I prefer much easier and less strenuous activities.”
“Such as sex with a married woman?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook
Professor Plum’s eyes widen, “Miles, I’m not sure I know what you are talking about.”
“I know about you and Roxanne Prussian.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “From what I can remember, her husband can get pretty violent when he’s upset. Isn’t he the one who is medicating you? If he got mad at you for some reason I’d be afraid to take a pill that he prescribed.”
“You seem to think you are holding something over me,” Professor Plum says, “I deny having ever felt anything for Roxanne and I deny these absurd accusations of having an affair with Roxanne.”
“I have a witness who with come forward if you don’t buy my silence.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“A witness?” asks Professor Plum
“In fact I’m pretty sure I have a few people willing to take my side whether or not they actually saw it or not.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“So you’d blackmail other people just to blackmail me?” Professor Plum says, “You must really be hard up for cash.”
“I like being in control.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “I grew up in a town where everyone gossiped about one another. I was always the one being talked about. I know how it feels to have someone talking about you behind your back.”
“It doesn’t stop you,” Professor Plum says getting up and balancing on one foot
“I am trying to keep the gossip down to a minimum.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “No one else has to know about your secret if you just agree to give me what I want.”
“And what exactly is it that you want?” asks Professor Plum
“I want you to kill Rusty Naylor.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“The gardener?” asks Professor Plum, “Why would I do that?”
“The reason isn’t of your concern.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “I want him dead.”
“I’m not a murderer.” Professor Plum says
“Perhaps you are, perhaps you aren’t,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Something tells me that something happened while you and Miss Scarlet disappeared to Paris last month. Something that resulted in your hospitalization. Something that you left out. I can leave that alone or I can dig into it. It’s your choice.”
In the Hall of Tudor Close, Miss Peach bumps into Mr. Ash.
“I’m terribly sorry!” Mr. Ash apologizes setting Miss Peach back up on her feet.
“I wasn’t watching where I was going.” Miss Peach dusts herself off
“Forgive me, but guests are not to be roaming around the house today.” Mr. Ash says, “Especially after the trouble we had the other night when you and your father broke in.”
“Oh I’m just running to the Kitchen to get some ice from Mrs. White.” Miss Peach says, “The Professor hurt his ankle playing tennis.”
“Oh I see,” Mr. Ash says, “Well she should be in the Kitchen.” He points to the door. Miss Peach heads towards the Kitchen when Mr. Ash stops her with his arm, “Since I have you here, have you by chance seen Mrs. Black?”
“I can’t say I have.” Miss Peach says
“Oh well,” Mr. Ash says, “Carry on.”
Miss Peach enters the Kitchen as Mr. Ash turns to the Bathroom door. He knocks and pushes it opened. He finds it empty. With a shrug he turns to the Conservatory door.
Miles Meadow-Brook walks along the sidewalk between the Rose Garden and Tudor Close he is stopped by Mrs. Peacock who is walking towards him with a Silver Champagne Bucket in her hand.
“Penelope,” Mr. Meadow-Brook nods in her direction politely as he draws nearer to her.
“You son of a bitch!” Mrs. Peacock shouts as she swings the Bucket at his head. It knocks him in the side of the head knocking his glasses off.
“Penelope what the hell?” Mr. Meadow-Brook shouts in pain as he regains his balance.
“I know what you did to Cynthia.” Mrs. Peacock shouts
“Be reasonable.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says wiping his head with his hand to check for blood.
“Stay away from her you sick bastard!” Mrs. Peacock shouts
“Jane?” Mr. Meadow-Brook snaps in shock as he sees his wife approaching them
“What is going on?” Mrs. Meadow-Brook asks
“Keep your husband away from my step daughter.” Mrs. Peacock says turning away from them and heading towards the Tennis Courts
“Miles what the hell is going on?” Mrs. Meadow-Brook furrows her brow as she follows Mrs. Peacock with her eyes
“Just a simple misunderstanding.” Mr. Meadow-Brook assures her
“Whatever you are doing you need to stop.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “Before you end up like Hugh Black…”
“Oh come on,” Mr. Meadow-Brook laughs, “Who would want to murder me.”
From the Conservatory windows Sylvia Black sits motionless in the wicker chair, staring out at Mr. and Mrs. Meadow-Brook. Mr. Ash enters the Conservatory to see Sylvia sitting limp in the chair.
“Sylvia perhaps you should have thought this garden party through if you were just going to sit around and mope.” Mr. Ash says walking towards her, “Sylvia!”
He rushes over to her and takes her pulse.
“She’s alive.” Prince Azure says from the shadowy corner of the room.
“What have you done to her?” asks Mr. Ash
“I found her like this.” Prince Azure says setting a second syringe on the table, “I gave her a dose of this to counteract the drugs she took. She should be waking up soon.”
“What do you want from us?” asks Mr. Ash
“I want the fun to begin.” Prince Azure says checking his watch, “In exactly fifty-six minutes a bomb that has been hidden somewhere amongst the partying guests will detonate. I’d hate for Sylvia to miss out on the fun.”
Outside in the Gazebo, Miss Peach ices Professor Plum’s ankle while Mrs. Peacock and Colonel Mustard toast champagne to each other. Mrs. Meadow-Brook and Mr. Meadow-Brook head towards the Gazebo.
“Are you ready for this?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook as he looks at his wife with a stern face
“Are you sure announcing our divorce here is a good idea?” Mrs. Meadow-Brook asks biting her lip
“Would you rather tell everyone about our divorce individually over and over again?” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Everyone that is important to us is here. Let’s just get it over with.”
At the Gazebo, Mayor Cerise and Lady Oakwood chat unreservedly as a caterer passes by them with a plate of canapés. Miss Scarlet leans against one of the Gazebo posts as she stares at Miles Meadow-Brook with hatred in her eyes. Lord Grey approaches her.
“Have you seen Lady Lavender?” he asks with a bit of panic on his breath
“Who?” Miss Scarlet asks not taking her eyes off Mr. Meadow-Brook
“Lady Lavender,” Lord Grey says, “My escort.”
“I’m afraid I wasn’t properly introduced.” Miss Scarlet says as Lord Grey shakes his head in aggravation and moves on to the next person.
Mrs. White sits bored at a table wearing a white blouse and a light gray skirt with matching shoes.
“You don’t exactly seem to be the life of the party.” Mr. Boddy says sitting next to Mrs. White
“Would you be a dear and fetch me a Gin and Tonic?” Mrs. White asks
Mr. Boddy chuckles and leaves the Gazebo.
“Everyone,” Mr. Meadow-Brook clears his throat, “I have an announcement to make.”
The chatter begins to subside until only the sound of birds and water bubbling from the fountain is heard.
“Thank you,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “I don’t like big scenes and I don’t like repeating myself which is why I am making this announcement in front of all of you.”
Rusty Naylor listens from nearby and stops clipping the shrubs with his sharp Garden Shears.
“Jane and I are getting a divorce.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
There is a gasp from several people followed by quiet chatter.
“I thought you should know.” Mr. Meadow-Brook walks away from the Gazebo towards the Garden.
“Jane,” Mrs. Peacock comes over to her, “Are you alright.”
“I’ll be fine.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says sitting down at the table with Mrs. White
“Some party.” Mrs. White mutters as Mr. Boddy brings her a glass of Gin and Tonic
“What did I miss?” Mr. Boddy asks oblivious to the commotion around them.
In the Stable, clothes are scattered around the hay covered floor. Jet Black and Lady Lavender lay together on the soft hay pile near the back of the Stable. The doors open and Lord Grey enters with fire in his eyes.
“You are dead, boy!” he shouts at Jet who frantically trying to cover himself up.
Lord Grey grabs a Wrench from the toolbench nearby and approaches Jet with it.
“No!” Lady Lavender shouts as Lord Grey hurries towards Jet with the rust-covered metal tool.
