Episode 34 – “In Untrustworthy Hands”
Previously on the Memoirs of Mayfield: Everyone is in attendance at Hugh Black’s funeral, including Mrs. Peacock who is hiding in the car that Miss Scarlet and Chandler drove to the cemetery. Miss Scarlet is enraged that Mrs. Peacock followed them to Hugh’s Funeral. She then explains to her that she is willing to keep her hidden from the police if she doesn’t do anything stupid. Mrs. Peacock ignores her while drinking and taking pain pills and wondering why her plot to murder wasn’t successful. Mr. Green has made a deadly deal by allowing Sergei and Bradford to assassinate him in return for information of Scott’s whereabouts which he will hand over to Sylvia to end this once and for all. Scott is being held in the Attic of Tudor Close by Monsieur Brunette and Sergei Gold. Mrs. Black invites Miss Scarlet and Chandler to a memorial to Hugh at Tudor Close that night. They agree to come, but when they return to their car Mrs. Peacock is missing…
-Friday, April 23, 1949 –
-Afternoon-
“Chandler,” Miss Scarlet says as a million horrible scenarios race through her mind, “What are we going to do? We can’t go to the police; we’ll be arrested for harboring a fugitive! We can’t warn people that Mrs. Peacock is roaming around drunk and under the influence of pain pills.”
“Where would she have gone?” asks Chandler
“She was talking about how hungry she was and wanting a bowl of noodles.” Miss Scarlet says
“We could check the diner.” Chandler says
“Hurry!” Miss Scarlet gets back into the car as she and Chandler drive off.
Mrs. Jane Meadow-Brook stands near the fresh dirt at Hugh’s grave she sets a rose down amongst the other roses. Mr. Miles Meadow-Brook walks over to her.
“Hello, Jane.” Mr. Meadow-Brook greets his wife
“I’m not talking to you.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says
“We are both going to Hugh’s memorial.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Let’s get the awkwardness out of the way sooner rather than later.”
Mr. Meadow-Brook reaches into his pocket and withdraws a note.
“If this is full of your apologies then it is a waste of time.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “I’m done with you.”
“I think you’d better read it.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “It’s in your best interest.”
Mrs. Meadow-Brook opens the note
Dear Jane,
You have always been an understanding wife. That is why this marriage will continue. If you divorce me I will not only inform the police of your brother’s drug ring but I will personally call Sergei Gold and tell him what name you are going under. Think it over. What would you rather lose: your husband, or your freedom?
Good Luck, You’ve Only One Week to Decide
Your loving husband
“You are mad!” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says, “This is your solution for our marriage?”
“Only a temporary solution,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Something tells me that you will change your mind about leaving me very soon.”
“If anything, this should show me what a wicked man you truly are.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says
“Ah, Jane,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says with a look of complacency, “You don’t know the lengths I’ll go to in order to keep what is mine.”
“You think you own me?” Mrs. Meadow-Brook asks in disgust
“I own your secrets,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “Never make waves with the one who knows everything about you.”
“Miles I want a divorce.” Mrs. Meadow-Brook says
“Well we don’t always get what we want, now do we?” Mr. Meadow-Brook walks away from her and over to Mrs. Black. Mrs. White and Mr. Ash are talking silently with her and Jet. Inspector Brown is milling about near them.
“Sylvia,” Mr. Meadow-Brook smiles, “I take it that you will still be helping me with what we discussed in the Conservatory the other day?”
-FLASHBACK- THREE DAYS AGO-
“Thank you so much, Miles!” Mrs. Black says, “How can I ever repay you.”
“Funny you should ask.” Mr. Meadow-Brook reaches into his pocket and pulls out a note.
Dear Mrs. Black,
I just wanted to let you know that there may indeed be more to your late husband’s life that you were aware of. It appears his infidelity did not end around the whole Jessica/Bryce scenario. Nurse Florence Primrose just confessed that she was deeply in love with your husband as they were having an affair. With all the rumors going out about your true involvement in Hugh’s death I thought you would like to have this little bit of information kept secret. Our families have been like one big happy family over the years and I intend to keep your secrets, so long as you convince Jane to take me back. I really hope you can convince Jane to love me again, because if you can’t, this information will just land on Inspector Brown’s desk and he will reopen the Hugh Black case and possibly find you guilty.
Good Luck, You’ve Only One Week to Fix This
Miles Meadow-Brook
“What the hell is this?” Mrs. Black is visibly upset
“Think of it as you scratch my back, I scratch yours.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“You are blackmailing me?” Mrs. Black asks, “After everything we’ve been through?”
“Oh don’t think of it as blackmail!” Mr. Meadow-Brook hushes her and takes a sip of wine, “Think of it as a favour. You said you wanted to repay me, this is how you can.”
“So this is your ‘solution’ to get back with Jane.” Mrs. Black says
“More or less.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“What if she refuses.” Mrs. Black asks downing her wine quickly
“Oh she won’t.” Mr. Meadow-Brook smirks, “You do your part and hers will follow.”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“Of course, Miles,” Mrs. Black pastes on a fake smiles, “You’ve been such a help to us ever since Hugh passed.”
“You are a lamb,” Mr. Meadow-Brook pats Mrs. Black on the arm, “Get some rest. It’s been a long morning.”
“Mr. Meadow-Brook,” Inspector Brown approaches him
“Inspector,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “What can I do for you.”
“I was hoping you could help me wrap up one final thing regarding Emily Peach’s suicide.” Inspector Brown leads him away from the other mourners.
“Inspector,” Mr. Meadow-Brook lowers his voice, “No disrespects, but this is not exactly the time or place to have this discussion.”
“Well,” Inspector Brown says, “I did a little research in your and Emily’s affair and I noticed that not one shilling was removed from your account.”
“What is your point?” Mr. Meadow-Brook asks
“All those hotel bills, dinner reservations, and other amenities would have cost a sizable sum.” Inspector Brown says, “I highly doubt that a man of your astute class would have his female companion pay for the affair.”
“What are you getting at?” asks Mr. Meadow-Brook
“I know all about your little off shore account with Mr. Green and the late Dr. Black.” Inspector Brown says
Mr. Meadow-Brook remains silent
“I’m not an unreasonable man.” Inspector Brown says
“You aren’t an honest man either, I’m guessing,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “What do you want.”
“With Hugh Black dead there seems to be a position open in this little scheme.” Inspector Brown says
“Indeed there is,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “But you don’t have anything to bring to the table.”
“Protection.” Inspector Brown says, “I am a law enforcer, after all.”
“Mr. Green is our source of protection.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“We don’t need his thugs to draw any unwanted attention to this, do we?” asks Inspector Brown, “I take it you are the legal consultant, Mr. Green has the ‘connections’, and Hugh Black was the financial donor. Am I right?”
“You seem to know a lot about this business.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“I’ve been around long enough to know how these things operate.” Inspector Brown says
“Then you should know that we always do research of our own before letting people in.” Mr. Meadow-Brook says
“Miles,” Inspector Brown says, “If you don’t answer yes or no right now I will arrest you in front of everyone.”
“Welcome to the team, Inspector Brown,” Mr. Meadow-Brook says, “I’ll be sure to let Mr. Green know.”
“Good man,” Inspector Brown says, “My brother will be happy to hear that I’m actually making something useful out of this police job.”
Mr. Meadow-Brook walks away towards his car, “The blackmailer, just got blackmailed.”
In her room at the convent, Julia Oakwood continues to think about the two dead people in the picture with her mother and the one woman she recognizes.
“She looks so familiar.” Miss Oakwood wonders out loud, “I know I’ve seen her before.”
There is a knock at the door.
“Come in,” she says
“It’s me, dear,” Sister Mary Marjorie says, “I did a little asking and I found out who that woman in the picture is.”
“Really?” Miss Oakwood says with excitement, “Who?”
“Well everyone always called her Aunt Lillian, but rumor has it she was actually Celeste Curry,” Sister Mary Marjorie says with a smirk
“Ms. Curry was murdered a week ago.” Miss Oakwood says
“Are you thinking what I am?” asks Sister Mary Marjorie sitting down next to Miss Oakwood on the bed
“That my mother is involved in both Sister Silver and Ms. Curry’s deaths and the disappearance on Reverend Moss?” Miss Oakwood says
“I wouldn’t go as far as to say that your mother is the killer,” Sister Mary Marjorie says shaking her head, “But I do think it is a coincidence that all three of them are no longer present in Mayfield.”
“You have a very nice way of putting the gory details.” Miss Oakwood says, “My mom killed all three, I’m sure of that.”
“We needed jump to any rash conclusions,” Sister Mary Marjorie says, “We don’t even know if Reverend Moss is dead.”
Miss Oakwood begins to process all the information in her head.
Miss Scarlet and Chandler drive up near the café.
“Do you think she’s in there?” asks Chandler
“Everyone is too calm.” Miss Scarlet says, “Hell would be breaking loose.”
“Where else would she have gone?” Chandler asks
-FLASHBACK- EARLIER THAT DAY-
“I’m sure Sylvia would forgive me,” Mrs. Peacock says
“I don’t think so.” Miss Scarlet says opening the car door
“Where are you going?” asks Mrs. Peacock
“To get Chandler so we can leave.” Miss Scarlet says, “I don’t want to be here when Inspector Brown comes around.”
-END OF FLASHBACK-
“No,” Miss Scarlet thinks out loud, “Surely she would be smart enough to stay away.”
At Tudor Close, Mr. Green puts the envelope on the bench on the front porch. He makes sure it is not going to get wet from the rain. On the envelope in large bold ink is written ‘To Sylvia: my last good deed’. He looks up at the doors of Tudor Close and remembers the first time he ever came to Tudor Close, many years ago.
-FLASHBACK- January 2, 1928-
Snow is falling down quickly around the grounds of Tudor Close. Mr. Green and Mrs. Meadow-Brook (Marie Emerald) huddle inside of the Carriage House.
“Are you sure this was a good idea?” asks Marie
“My father has done business with Dr. Black and his father in the past.” Mr. Green says, “He’ll help us out.”
“Marc,” Marie says, “We are fugitives.”
“Our birth certificates, passports, and any other forms of identification were in the hotel when it went up in flames.” Mr. Green says, “We can start over and change our first names.”
“Why not change our full names?” asks Marie
“Because Dr. Black will know me as Mr. Green.” He says, “Thallo.”
“Who?” asks Marie
“That’s my new name,” Mr. Green says, “Thallo Green. I went to finishing school with a Thallo.”
“Jane.” Marie says, “I’ll be Jane Emerald.”
“Jane and Thallo.” Mr. Green smiles, “I think it fits.”
“I suppose it does.” Miss Emerald says
“Time to make ourselves known in this town.” Mr. Green says
“What town are we in, anyway?” Miss Emerald asks
“The city is called Mayfield.” Mr. Green says, “But it is divided into three different villages. We are in Hampshire.”
“Mayfield,” Miss Emerald says in thought
-END OF FLASHBACK-
Mr. Green takes his hand off of the door unaware that he is being watched.
At his flat, Dr. Olive boils some water at the stove. Miss Georgia Peach sits in the dining alcove’s window seat. She is looking out at the rain which is flooding the driveway.
“Why does is rain so much in England?” asks Miss Peach
“Americans always ask that.” Dr. Olive chuckles, “Are you warm?”
“Still a bit cold.” Miss Peach says
“I’ve got some leaves brewing in the tea.” Dr. Olive sits down with her
“What is it with the English and their tea?” Miss Peach asks
“Tradition.” Dr. Olive says, “And it’s a relaxing way to break up the afternoon.”
“I’m sorry,” Miss Peach chuckles, “I hate to point out all the overdramatized stereotypes.”
“Think nothing of it.” Dr. Olive says
“I haven’t properly thanked you for letting me stay here.” Miss Peach says
“I enjoy the company.” Dr. Olive says, “And we have another psychologist filling in at the sanatorium today.”
“So this is your day off?” asks Miss Peach
“Every Friday.” Dr. Olive says
“I’m leaving on Sunday.” Miss Peach says in a low voice
“You sound disappointed.” Dr. Olive says
“I have so many questions that need answers.” Miss Peach says, “I can’t bother the Black’s during their time of mourning.”
“I understand.” Dr. Olive says
“I mean that man… Mr. Green,” Miss Peach closes her eyes, “He held a gun on Mrs. Black the other day. If it hadn’t been for you and your good aim she may have been shot.”
“I still feel there is more to that story they gave us that what is truly happening.” Dr. Olive says
“As do I,” Miss Peach says, “If I didn’t have enough questions I would try to figure out what happened there too.”
“I heard Mrs. Black is holding a memorial for Hugh at her mansion tonight.” Dr. Olive says, “Hugh used to come in an examine mental patients from time to time, I’m sure I could contribute to the memories of Hugh Black. That would also give you a chance to introduce yourself to Sylvia.”
“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt.” Miss Peach says
“Wonderful!” Dr. Olive says, “And maybe we can get find out what really happened on Ceil Drive.”
In the Attic of Tudor Close, Scott sits slowly trying to free is hands from the ropes. Sergei Gold and Monsieur Brunette both have their backs to him. They are staring out the window as Mr. Green leaves Tudor Close.
“A hit has been put out on Mr. Green.” Sergei says, “He is to die at 8 o’clock this evening.”
“Oh?” Monsieur Brunette says
“It’s a long story,” Sergei says, “You wouldn’t understand or agree with my methods.”
“Don’t leave me in the dark,” Monsieur Brunette says
Sergei lowers his voice so Scott doesn’t hear, “Mr. Green agreed to give his life over the boy’s kidnapping. We return the boy to the Black’s and Green is killed.”
“That wasn’t a very long story.” Monsieur Brunette chuckles
“I figured you would be mad.” Sergei says
“I am.” Monsieur Brunette takes his pocket knife and stabs Sergei in the side, “You go through me before making these decisions.”
“You killed him.” Scott says in horror
“Don’t act so shocked, kid.” Monsieur Brunette says, “I killed Donald Coal in Paris.”
“Where are you going?” Scott asks as Monsieur Brunette heads towards the staircase.
“I need to get out of here.” Monsieur Brunette says, “It looks like everything is going to be working out in your best interest, unless you starve to death in your own attic.”
“Please!” Scott shouts after Monsieur Brunette as he descends the stairs
“I haven’t got time,” Monsieur Brunette calls up, “I have money to collect. Won’t Bradford be pissed?”
In the Driveway of Tudor Close, Mrs. Black gets out of her car with the help of Mr. Ash. She begins to climb the porch stairs when she sees a brown envelope on the porch. She quickly picks it up and opens it. A look of shock and anxiousness is on her face as she enters the Mansion quickly.
Back in the Attic, Sergei Gold has managed to crawl over to Scott. His blood is pooling beneath him.
“You are going to be safe.” Sergei says, “Mr. Green left a note for your mother where to find you. Everything is going to be okay.”
Scott nods in fear as Sergei passes out from blood loss. The door to the attic stairwell opens and Scott turns quickly to the doorway.
“Expecting someone else?” Mrs. Peacock asks with a devious grin on her face.
In the Study of Tudor Close, Mrs. Black enters and drops the envelope on the desk. She rereads the contents of the brown envelope over and over while Mr. Ash stands in the doorway with a concerned look on his face.
“Ma’am?” he asks
“Mrs. Peacock left a note inside of the envelope.” Mrs. Black says, “She says that if I come forward to saying that Bradford murdered Hugh and framed her that she will return Scott to me safe and sound.”
“Should I call Inspector Brown?” asks Mr. Ash
“No.” Mrs. Black says, “I think it’s time to pay Mrs. Peacock a visit.”
“Where will she be?” asks Mr. Ash
Mrs. Black reads the last sentence of the letter, “At the Boat House after sunset.”
